Default RS's smoking on track?

I've noticed on you tube, track days and the like that Cossies and RS Turbos all seems to smoke to varying degrees when driven hard, it always seems to clear, and comes and goes.

No one seems to bat an eyelid and all of them can't be knackered.

Its always a blue/grey smoke, so is it a mix of fuel and oil surge?

Is it just what they do?

Cheers,
Stu

It's a mixture of unspent fuel and oil...

if a cossie doesn't puff a little every now and again then worry! a fair bit is likely to be unburnt fuel on over run but a little oil smoke's nothing out of the ordinary on any engine used hard, especially one designed in the 70/80's!

Unburnt fuel = cloud of smoke or a ball of flames.

I get spoken too at every trackday by the marshals, who mention to me about the smoke.

Gets me this,90% of Cosworth owners on here say as there car does NOT smoke !.
Mine used to do it on over un/run down whatever you want to call it.Half a litre of oil every 500 miles. Not to get in the argument of rings,v guides breather etc it got driven hard.
Ridgey your picture is like Baskys one, nice big flame Its gotta go some where when you come to a corner after a foot too the floor.
Most of the vids on the internet show them doing a few puffs gaytube maybe ??

My mates Evo 8 done it, only 4-6000 miles on it at the time.

Its a trait of a turbo car really.

Fucking hell Matt, you must be the first honest owner I've ever seen I do exactly the same with mine and my mate does.
Even the handbook states 1 litre every 700 miles from new, yet all those for sale never use oil or smoke. They won't if you never take it out

Flames should be the rule of any ownership

I hated my cossies for the smoke! One of mine used to use so much oil it was a joke. I just hate the look of it. None of the Jap stuff I've had uses oil.

High temps mainly causing engines to breathe heavy

Edited to add a cossie in very good order in standard form will use 0.5 litre every 1k so it stands to reason they will use a lot more when modified and used on track

No if it is stage 3 and not even doing 3/4 of litre in 1k then then fastest car you need is a 305 Peugeot deisel and you need to retire from cossie ownership.

The yb breathes heavy compared to most engines matt so if you get them hot like you would on a track ( unlike botters ) they just breathe heavier and I've never seen one that don't use a bit of oil

i know this is an old thread but

when i took the head of mine i leveled the pissingtons and filled with a cheap thin oil and left whilst head had a build(new guide stem seals etc)and it lost hardley any oil down past the rings(well not enough to think of changing rings)prob about 2-3mm all equal though.and when back together it still smoked on track a little but flamed better, its the way they are tbh, think it say in handbook they burn oil from new,a good set up will see any excessive oil in the lambda readings and over breathing issue,s
still miss my old saph now
