Does the car the plate is on need to be taxed and tested or just have test to put plate on retention

Cheers

yes it needs to be taxed and testes massive pain! my cossie is being restored but it's uk reg in Spain with private plate and I want to register it here in Spain, but for me to remove plate to sell I've got to take it back to uk to get taxed and tested!
I said what happens to a car that's been sat for 10 years and is going to be scrapped they say you will loose the plate! fucking rediculous!

Friend got his plate off his old Subaru. No engine, no tax and MOT just expired. DVLA are usually utter shit to deal with but they were very helpful and the plate was transferred within a fortnight.

if it has been taxed or mot in last 6 months you can, but if it's been longer you can't.
