on that budget, without much of a reliability gamble a saxo VTS for £500, phase2 so its not rotten preferbly, would be my choice. Mechanically identical to a 106GTi.
Then, a 2nd hand supersprint exhaust system and a 4branch can usually be picked up for £200. £200 set of kent cams or similar and without a map 140bhp pretty realistically, remapped 160ish is possible. Strip it completely and you will have a pretty quick little car!

Saxo vts, Give it a good thorough service, and strip it, with a set of remoulds. Bound to stick to the road like shit to a blanket. And whatever money is left to tune it.

Saxo VTS/106 GTI tho...You'd wont get a minter but with the right mods there a weapon...I had a 106 GTI.....Used to piss over modded Volvo T5's etc, Corsa VXR's. Red top Astra's and things, RS2000's etc etc

I only had a Full System Group N Pugsport exhaust and a decent induction kit but it was the right mods for the engine, I just made sure i kept it well maintained, serviced every 6k with decent oil/filters etc

Standard 172, no mods needed. It should be reliable and very economical for the performance. Anything modded at that price = trouble.

What sort of fast?
Just sold my big old 4.2 V8 for a grand and it would do 0-60 in just over 6 seconds and reach about 170mph flat out.

I kid you not. The power to weight ratio is great....They love to rev, Mine used to scream to nearly 8k!. don't knock it till you tried it

I was a french car hater but the french know how to make a hot hatch!

& the 106/Saxo is like a go cart

& I bet you wouldn't believe that the quickest official time around Castle Combe is a 1600 NA 106 GTI!

I had one of these about 15 years ago, rover 800 turbo vitesse sports lux, was filled with extras, felt like a rocket ship after my previous cars and never put a foot wrong so was lucky really.

Downside, every bird I knocked about with at the time all said 'why have you bough an old mans car'
