thinking outside the box and i have one up for grabs soon:
alfa romeo gtv 2.0, 155bhp, shift well, handle well, look well.
sadly group 31 insurance on the new scheme, but they are a laugh and limiter is 7400rpm IIRC, they love to rev.
if the engine has been looked after and variator is in good order you'll have a good one.

seriously go and drive one, not the fastest thing granted, but out the box is pretty good.

Agreed to pretty much all the above but a good big motored beemer or merc can be had well under a grand.
Good one is an ls400, big V8 and bombproof build.

I was a french car hater but the french know how to make a hot hatch!

& I bet you wouldn't believe that the quickest official time around Castle Combe is a 1600 NA 106 GTI!
Umm....i wouldn't believe the quickest time bit no, for the 1.6 saloon class yeah (no surprise as they're what pretty much all the front runners use and running 220+bhp screamer engines) but the quickest official time

Fastest official times are Current saloon lap record holder is 115.9 on road tyres, 114.3 on full slicks...done in a 1600 NA 106

Prebble was doing 1.11 ten years ago in his rover coupe? This was the record for a long time in a saloon car, he has beaten that time again since in his evo,
Then you got the radical,s doing 59-58 sec laps now.

anyone racing a radical round Combe would be upset to be above 1:10 !
They are usually down in the 1:05-1:07 range.
He's very very fast round there, but a county mile away from the lap record which is around 1:01 IIRC

This is a rite up from a race that Gary prebble was in with his saloon evo.
struggling home in 4th place with the slowing Hall limping home a lap down and in 5th with Dave smith also a lap down rounding out the top 6 in a race of attrition despite the small grid with Shanley also taking the fastest lap with a 1m05.586 averaging 101.54 mph in a easy race for shanley and that

This is from the missed AAA saloon championships

Vaughan Fletcher No:15 Castle Combe 30th August 2010 Rounds 9 & 10

No: 15 Grp B Subaru AAA Season Finale

Castle Combe History:

Castle Combe lies just off the M4 in Wiltshire, and is one of the countries oldest and well loved circuits in the UK.

As with a lot of the British circuits, Castle Combe’s history can be traced back to WW2, and an RAF base. The Castle Combe airfield saw use from 1941 until it was decommissioned in 1948.

The circuit opened in the summer of 1950, which along with Silverstone, makes it one of the longest established circuits in the UK.

Set in the rolling countryside, today the circuit proves popular with competitors and spectators alike.

AAA Saloon Cup

On August Bank Holiday Monday 2010, the AJEC AAA Saloon Cup made its final outing of the season at the Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire, and Vaughan Fletcher was there to put his Grp B Subaru through its paces.

With an appetite thoroughly whetted after rounds 7 & 8 at Oulton Park, Vaughan took the decision to take part in the last two rounds of the AAA, and having raced and won at Castle Combe earlier on in the year, we were hoping for a good result.

Pre Race:

Coming to Castle Combe just a week after a race at Cadwell, there was little time available to prepare the car, and do any necessary repairs. Thankfully there was nothing obvious that needed doing, but as we would be running slicks in the AAA’s, the front hubs were checked over for any signs of wear etc. With the extra force generated by the grip of the slick tyres, the hubs get a high level of abuse, which can result in premature failure.

The tyres were swapped over to allow the slicks to run on the “Revolution” wheels. A decision was made to run with the stronger “Motorsport” wheel as apposed to the standard Subaru wheels we ran at Oulton. Finally new brake pads were fitted to the front, as these had worn below an acceptable level.

Race Day:

A Plant Lux Sportscar Raceday

The weekends racing was organised by Castle Combe circuit and it looked to be an exciting programme of events. In addition to the AAA Saloon Cup, there was planned racing from:

AJEC SALOON CAR INVITATION FUN RACE
Porsche Club Championship
Ferrari Formula Classic
Aston Martin Intermarque Championship
CCRC Sportscar Challenge
Castle Combe FF1600 Championship
Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship
Castle Combe Special GT Championship

Qualifying:

For the last event of the year, the AAA Saloon Cup had put on a good turn out with a grid made up of 6 cars in Group A, 7 cars in Group B and 11 in the Invitational event.

Group B was made up of:

04. Spencer Turner Subaru Impreza Sti
14. Angus Gorringe Audi S2
15. Vaughan Fletcher Subaru Impreza RA
33. Dominic Barnes Mitsubishi Evo 8
44. Ian Froggat Subaru Impreza RA
66. Steven Liquorish Mitsubishi Evo 10
69. Malcolm Stevens Mitsubishi 3000 GT
75. Martin Thomas Mitsubishi Evo 8

Using data collected from a previous race at Combe, the front suspension was set up, and the tyre pressures adjusted. Past experience has shown how little changes made to these two areas help the performance of the car on track.

After a couple of laps to bed in the new brakes, and bring the tyres up to temperature Vaughan started his qualifying in earnest and looked to pull something special out of the bag at the home circuit of the AAA’s.

When the results came in Vaughan had placed 1st in Group B and a credible 3rd overall behind the Group A 700bhp Evo’s of local racers Gary Prebble and Laurie Kilby.

Qualified 1st in class
Qualified 3rd overall
Fastest lap: 1:13.697

Pole: Gary Prebble
2nd: Laurie Kilby
3rd: Vaughan Fletcher

Race 1
Round 9:

Following qualifying, the suspension was checked the camber was re-adjusted to allow better tyre wear and the car was refuelled.

As a result of an issue in qualifying, the 2nd placed car of Kilby failed to make it to the grid, meaning Vaughan was right up with Prebble from the off.

With the safety car in and the red lights out, the race was on. Coming through from mid pack was Mark Biggers in his Nissan Skyline. In a car capable of running 900bhp at the wheels, he made short work of getting up front and slotting in behind Prebble, and putting Vaughan back to 3rd.

Prebble and his Evo kept the Skyline in second place for a few laps until his engine started smoking, giving Prebble no option but to retire.

Promoted to second place, Vaughan did all he could to stay in contention with the Skyline on the chance he had a problem, but he did not. With a 4 second advantage over the ScoobyClinic prepared Impreza, Biggers crossed the line to win group A.

Vaughan finished second overall, and was the clear GpB winner from Steve Liquorish's Evo X. Upon finishing the race, Liquorish was discovered that his oil dipstick had blown out and sprayed engine all over the engine bay and bonnet.

Finished 1st in class
Finished 2nd overall
Fastest lap: 1:13.027 on lap 3 of 13

1st: Mark Biggers
2nd: Vaughan Fletcher
3rd: Steve Liquorish

Race 2
Round 10:

Following the race, the car was checked over in readiness for race 2. Again, the suspension was adjusted in order to gain the best possible lap time. There wasn’t much else to do other than to add enough fuel to see us through the race.

For Race 2, the Skyline again showed its superior power, and led from the rolling start. However, due to a missed braking point at “Bobbies” on the opening lap Vaughan took the invitation to pass and took the lead. Running back up to “Folly” the Skyline powered back to the front and stayed there for the rest of the race.

Still not one for giving up, Fletcher kept on the pace and again finished an impressive second overall, and GpB winner setting a new lap record for the Grp B class at Combe.

Finished 1st in class
Finished 2nd overall
Fastest lap: 1:12.784 on lap 12 of 13
Awarded Launch Motorsport Driver of the Day (Race 2)

1st: Mark Biggers
2nd: Vaughan Fletcher
3rd: Ian Froggatt

Overall a great day with excellent results.

Thanks to everyone who has made this possible, including all the sponsors and friends and family who are always on hand to help out.

106 gti or 306 gti6, sell the engine out it and throw in a 2l 8v turbo engine from 405,406 sri.

Done that a couple times. front mount, exhaust, induction kit and boost turned upto a bar see`s 220bhp- 260bhp in a very cheap way. Love the look on peoples faces when you pass them in a 306 (Just before I sold my most recent one I bet a new shape s3)

Like others have said a 106 gti, very easily tuned. Can get parts pretty easy and cheap. Just dont do what I have done and get far too carried away and end up spending far far too much, although it is nice passing evo`s

I know about the castle combe saloons lol, hence my reply....your post simply said the lap record holder was a 106 which is totally untrue! Class lap record is hardly the same thing, and it's definately not the overall saloon record!
