Default Zetec turbo advice

Hi All,

I have decided to bit the bullet and go Zetec turbo in my GTi, the aim is for around 350bhp.
I am hoping to use a 2.0 Silvertop as I already have the engine and it bolts straight into my engine bay.
I have purchased Eagle Rods and Supertech Pistons from the states, which should give a compression ratio of 8.7:1. I have a HO EFi inlet manifolt, but I have deigned a billet fuel rail. I am looking to run an Omex 600 ecu.

So is this a realistic basic spec? What injectors can/should I use? Will I need any head work? Will I need new cams? Will I be ok with the hydraulic lifters? Will the crank take that sort of power? What head gasket should I use? What else have I missed?

Regards, Kieren.

The crank will be fine at that power, I think most people use the standard headgasket (I think its multi layered from the factory, well I think so). Have you thought abnout a manifold to put the turbo on? And the turbo itself?

Crank will be fine just ise arp bolts and head bolt, area6 lifters/springs and even a cam from area6 just be careful of your boost level as causes crank vibration which is the cause of oul pump failure(if you can afford to go dry sump) focus rs injectors should be ok

I know you have a silvertop but me personally I would go st170 bottom end, blacktop head, frs inlet and exhaust manifold with injector rail

As stated crank is well upto the job and standard headgasket is ok too.
Head is good in standard form but you will need uprated valve springs.
I have just removed my HO efi inlet as i have changed my spec and i was using some subaru injectors ( the injectors are going up for sale if your interested? )
Also as stated above have you thought of a manifold and turbo?
As i say i have just changed my spec and i have a tubular manifold and freash built T34 turbo for sale.
You will also need a good intercooler and you may need to think about a gearbox and fuel pump etc

You need too either adapt your block or sump for an oil return!

Ok, had some advice on another forum as well, forgot to mention I have a T34 already.
Unsure of the manifold to put it on, although surely the genuine 2.0 ford focus tube manifold with the flange cut off and a T3 welded on would work?
I would prefer end feed injectors and if I can modify the sandwich plate I should be able to remove the leak issue.
I cant afford to go for dry sump, but im not looking to pull more than 7000rpm that and i wont be swapping any pulleys etc to try and limit the possibility of failure.
I know I will need to properly measure the CR when I have the engine out of the car, but is the 8.7:1 too high or too low? they are forged items so should be upto the 350bhp target.
Clutch and gearbow wise, probably looking at focus RS mtx75 and sach clutch, though swap the final drive to 3.56 possibly.

Think you need spacer with head gasket either side on a silvertop! I know on a blacktop you just use the frs thicker headgasket! but if your worried about CR you can always have the bowl on your pistons machined down!

8.7:1 comp ratio will be fine. plenty of zetec turbos running higher.have it checked though! a st170 headgasket is probably best for your needs .

Use any multi later head gasket from any later Blacktop engine. Your compression ratio is fine, crank is fine and don't bother with head work or uprated cams. Both are good as they are for 350bhp but you will need uprated valve springs.

get yourself the FRS thicker headgasket (for a skimmed head)

Good advice guys, keep it coming,

With respect to the CR and the head gasket, I will measure it when I have the engine out so I have an accurate figure, but with forged pistons, Omex 600 and good injectors (suggestions on this please as I was thinking Siemens of somekind??) would I be able to safely run a higher CR?

Oil pump wise and the whole what causes it to break on Zetecs, can I not run an external drive oil pump with a feed from the existing sump to the filter to prevent that issue all together?

If the cams are ok already, which valve springs? as I heard that I will need to go double valve spring instead of say Piper...

Can anyone see an issue with using the 2.0 focus maifold and swapping the flange? for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Focus...item2a28a09873

Compression ratio will be fine.

External oil pump set up is a good way to go but costs around Ł1000 and if you weren't going past 400bhp I really wouldn't bother - you will be fine.

Go for Cat Cams single valve springs for a Zetec. They are direct replacement and good for well over 500bhp - no need for double valve springs what so ever.

What management can you run with this then? Does it have to be after market?

manifolds are available cheap from the states (http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-Turbo-Ma...sories&vxp=mtr)

cat cams do springs, as do kent, piper, newman, area 6, devil developments, peugeot 106gti/saxo vts, etc. take your pick

personally i wouldn't go much higher with the CR, but thats just my preference. i'd stick the 1.8mm focus gasket on there (finis 1361410).

oil pump shouldn't be a concern, it's a known issue which can usually be remedied by preparing the pump and crank well. everyone seems to think this is the zetecs major downfall, but there have not been that many cases considering the amount of engines out there. everyone has their own theory on it too, one says it dies at 'x revs', another says 'x boost', one says its vibration, another says its flex. etc etc.

it was even an issue on remanufactured cvh's and vauxhall 8v's until the remanufacturing companies worked out why they were failing

If you're looking for a cheap exhaust manifold with a T3 flange I'm selling a standard Escort RS Turbo exhaust manifold with the flange cut off. It comes with a cast flange that I cut off a zetec manifold.
Just needs welded together - I was quoted aroud Ł30 to have this done.
I had bought one of the adaptors off ebay and when I offered it up the port holes were miles off so I decided to go this route.
In the end I bought a tubular manifold instead

I've heard a new theory on the why Zetec oil pumps fail which makes sense. It's to do with the gears trying climb out or overtake the outside housing as it spins. It seems to happen as the crank speed takes a massive step in acceleration - like when a big power Zetec comes on boost hard.

Preparing the crank and pump seems to do nothing from my experience.
