Default Info needed on VW Diesel engines, re interchangeability.

Our long serving Rover 200Vi spare car is way past its sell by date so I've been looking for a replacement and managed to find a cheap 2008 Golf 1.9 diesel that needs an engine (thrown a rod).

The engine code is BXE and I'm struggling to get one at reasonable money, someone said they thought the earlier 1.9tdi engines shared the same bottom end, does anyone have any info regarding that??

Not directly linked to your question, but the BKD engine is loads better.

Don't quote me on it but from memory I think the BKC is pretty much the same as a BXE.

True, plus its loads quieter.

If I was going to do a little project I;d want to use the best available.

But you have got your 1.9 mega cheap, so not knocking it.

Anyway we are miles off topic

Personally I'd stay away from vw diesels as they have some pore reliability of late. Seen lots of engines failing of recent. Rods, injector seals leaking ruining the top ends, pump failures etc

I mean what clever sod thaught, I know lets put the injector and fuel supply in the head, so when it leaks no one can tell and it'll distroy the engine!! And then re develop the top end, make it 16v and do the same again!

I worked at a Seat dealer/VAG specialist for over 5 years and can quite honestly say that the 1.9 PD engine is a very reliable engine.

I can't really say the same for the later 2.0 engines however.

I think that one is 19.0:1 comp ratio whereas mine is 18.5 (I think!)

hi martin this was a responce

in a nutshell, all 1.9 PD bottom ends are interchangeable, some have thicker con rods, cranks, , different oil squirters below the pistons, diff compression ratios, but essentially theres nothing in it and you could fit whichever you want. the BXE is alomst identical the the BKC which is very common, so that would be the ideal replacement

ill speak to my mate and confirm what he says

Thanks for your help Mark, the BKC is cheaper and looks more popular, I need to get the head off mine to make sure its all usable.

im a tech for volkswagen the newer volkswagens are poo full stop!! the 1.4 tsi cracks pistons and heads all the time. aparently its to do with the fuel we use over here . but yes the bottom ends are interchangable for what u need to do. they hate it at work my massive snap on box covered in ford stuff haha

The 1.9 is far more reliable than the 2.0, yes to the 1900 bottom ends, after working for SEAT for 10 years I can honestly say i never saw one rod through the block as a result of a poor engine design/component failure.

In fact I would say the PD is defo one of the better diesels out there.
