Anyone bought a car from Southern Ireland?
Anyone done it before? Any hoops you need to jump through to register it in the UK?
I plan on driving it back, what would I do about insurance, do UK companies insure cars on Irish plates?

I was looking into a M3 Evo GT11 in Southern ireland. I had a mate who imported a truck from there, you have something like 60 days or 3 months to register the car in the UK. It will need a MOT and a full check over if it was not registered in the UK originally. DVLA will have to find a registration for it etc. Does not cost much unless it is a dog and fails the MOT but is a bit of a pain in the ass with paperwork etc.

The dvla in Swansea just take the Irish log book and issue a uk one for a fee, not sure how much that is, once registered on uk plates its a case of normal mot to have it legal on uk roads

You need a certificate of conformity, a valid mot which gets done using the chassis number, a form from the DVLA and Ł60 and they will issue a reg number once you pay road tax. You also need valid insurance. I done an Astra a few years back and Vauxhall chargedŁ85 for the conformity cert.

The car i'm looking at is a jap import Toyota Levin, never available in the UK. I've not heard of this certificate of conformity thing when looking around the net.
edit. I did see that but ignored it as it only applies to cars under 10 years old.

If it has not come from this country you will need to change the lights or adjust them etc. It will no doubt go through a import process so like most jap cars would need some kind of sign off to say it has had the changes made to become a UK car. Is it dirt cheap or a really rare car?

I brought mine back from Ireland without tax and MOT. Just as long as it runs and you can drive it on and off the ship, then all is o.k. You must inform the port of your intentions though, to which they'll just advise you to have someone with a trailer on the other end so you can legally transport it from the port. At least this way, you can do the paper work after you get back.

It is cheap enough to be worth the hassle and rare also. The market for Jap imports in Ireland looks like it's collapsed. Loads of cheap stuff over there now.
I am weighing up if I should fly in to Ireland and drive it back. I'm looking at around Ł400 in terms of Ferry, Flight + petrol. The car is in Cork and there is no Ferry operating from Cork any more. It makes it a bit of a mission to drive it back.
Have been quoted Ł380 from Cork to Liverpool docks.

Port Police can be a bit anal, it's private grounds still. If you had trade plates, that would help, but a bit dodgy unless you have the bloke who owns them to come with you and drive the car so it's legit. But that's down to no tax or MOT like mine was.
I'd just hire a flatbed and ferry to and from Ireland, that way you use diesel only, no wear and tear on the car and reduce the chances of breaking down (Ford or not ).

Just go careful. I know there was a guy in Cork selling M3's and he was very dodgy! Swopping history folders, making it all up, bodging the hell out of cars etc. Not saying all are like this but just go careful.

I know what you mean about moody service history, clocked, etc but the car i'm looking at has come out of Japan originally and so all that stuff is taken with a pinch of salt anyway. I'll just go off current condition.
I've got no way of towing it. I either drive it or pay a company to bring it over for me.
The car is road legal in Ireland (NCT and tax), I shouldn't have a problem at the ports should I? Surely it's no different than if an Irish bloke came over to the UK on holiday.

you should have no probs at ports mate ,their are a few companys overe and back to the uk every week so getting it transporte would nt be a problem mate .
these guys are normally going out empty so are happy enough and not overly expensive.
if you like give me addresses of pickup and delivery and i will try get you a qoute from here,but i would try get the guy to bring the car to rosslare[stenaline] and you come over as a footpassenger from fishguard and drive it back.this just eliminates any chance of damage in transportation

Hey chief I've got 2 axles to collect from Paul in Wolverhampton and was thinking of doing ford fair as well, if I'm coming over I'm coming with the truck empty to the uk so I could bring it over, I'm also only 20 miles from cork city so if you want me to look I over and shit just ask, I use Fairfield Motorsport in Wales for the ferry booking and they are always around 250 ish euro return for the truck, chew it over and if you want me to check stuff over and bring it accords then shout,
