Standard vs standard the m3 would kill it
Spend the same money on the m3 as you would on the saph and I'd bet the m3 would still beat it
Can't compare modified vs standard

Have the answer! Coming back from a rolling road a few weeks back Harvey Gibbs built 500hp saff and a m3 e46 m3. The Cossie destroyed it. But as said already is pretty un fair to compare due to power difference. The m3 looked amazing tho and can see the appeal with them as their a great all rounder.
Not all cossies are un reliable tho, the ones that are seem to be messed with by people who don't know what their doing, blow them up and get very bitter about them afterwards!

I've just moved from a stage 3 rwd saff which was RR'd by the new owner @ 307 bhp at the wheels (if i remember correctly) and bought a e36 M3 Evo which was RR'd @ 319 bhp. All I can say is, the M3 was a brilliant car, but.... I had the saff for two happy fun years, I sold the M3 after 5 weeks of ownership!.

Doh then you compare e30 m3 with a standard saph besides you would need a lot more to spend on the e46 m3 then a saph lol

BMW had a natural sort of replacement for owners wanting to move on with the E36//E46 M3s so not surprising that ex-owners have gone for them or the Impreza/Lancer route.
Even now I think stuff like the 135i/335i ( and perhaps the new M3 coming with the turbo 6 engine ) are the nearest type of thing ( with the exception of the Jap cars above ) you get to the old rwd Cosworths - tuneable and fit 4 people in.
Imagine if Ford had done the 1M coupe ( or something very similar ) and badged it as an RS - would have been a great halo car and a modern-day take perhaps on the old Cosworth. I think a lot of 'M-car fans' even looked down on it and thought of it as not a 'proper' M-car.
Stuff like the new M135i seems appealing as I'm sure it will be slightly tuneable/modifiable. I'm not keen on the hatch looks but in a coupe shell ( or even small 4-door ) they look an interesting proposition especially at only 30k new

Whys that, budget builds i agree. I ran my Cossie at 500bhp for 4 years did 27k miles & it never missed a beat. 0-60 4.6 : 0-100 8.1 : 11.8 @ 127 qtr : 183.27 max recorded by mags, would need a lot of Power in a BMW to get on terms with that . My son had an M3 evo not good or reliable. Mind you isnt a 325i with a chip able to beat anything on the road .

dont get me wrong i like bms i have one as my daliy driver but would a m3 beat a cossie a 500hp one

I've quoted the original question because some people are getting confused, how I don't know but it seems to happen on here...a lot.
Anyway, no it wouldn't, unless you go throwing in ridiculous hypothetical occurances like "what if the cossie had a broken clutch cable". Utterly pointless comparison, anyone that knows anything about anything, at all, ever, will know it's not even a question worth asking or arguing about.
p.s I LOVE E46 M3's

I hope your not saying all M3's are overrted and sound like a "cat getting boned".. BMW made a hugeeeee leap from the E46 to the E92.. The E46 was an anazing car what does that make the E92

Does all anybody on here care about is in a straight line?
if so of course a 340bhp/1550kg car is going to be slower than a 500bhp/1350kg car.........its not rocket science.
The difference is when it comes to the corners/track days.
some people say you cant compare then because one is modified and one is standard, that I partially agree with.
But the easiest way to sort this out is a budget, that way, you are comparing like for like.
Say your given 7k to spend.
You buy an e46 m3 for £6500, leave the chassis standard, get an air filter and a remap, should give you a genuine 345bhp
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nice-Origi...item2ebff9105c
The for the cosworth, you choose something like this(but with interior)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Sapph...item35be150bfa
now in a straight line, yes the cosworth will be faster, in the corners i would say the m3 will be faster, on a track day with straights and corners, thats where it gets tricky.
And this is what we should comparing
If we compare like for like power, cosworth people complain its not fair as a m3 will cost more.
You can have a 500bhp m3 for £12000, £7000 for a car and £5000 for the supercharger kit.
Im not really up on cosworth prices at the moment but im guessing a 500bhp one is about £11,000? so not alot of difference there.
In that regards I would say the M3 is a better buy.
Are we really just comparing a standard m3 to a monster cosworth only in a straight line?

no. the pub argument was that he said his standard m3 would beat a 500bhp cosworth. thats as simple as it gets. no issues with corners, straights, similar budget costs, tuning or whatever. just simply that the guy said his standard m3 would beat a 500bhp cosworth.
i dont think it would , even around a bend after all a "properly sorted" 500bhp cosworth isnt likely to be on standard suspension, brakes or running gear..

This ^^^
I had a 440 BHP RWD cossie and while my M3 would destroy it in the lanes the simple fact is the M3 would not see where it went by the time I got out of third gear on the motorway.
I can watch TV in the M3 while losing though

raced many of them and the last one i raced i had to wave goodbye to him. . he said he couldnt believe it and that his car was shit power wise compared to mine .. i felt sorry for him tbh he paid 12k for it and said he cant beleive my 20 year old car still savaged it ! yes they are a fantastic car all round but dont try to compare it to a car that is STILL a beast from the early 90s..with 20years of making it yet even faster! made him feel like an idiot

Lol supercharge the M3 then it will be diffrent.. Cant see why people dont understand it.. A modded cossie is very quick.. A standard M3 isnt slow by any standards but compared to a modded 2.0l turbo weighing 1300kg it is.. Supercharge the M3 and you have more of a fight.

Ah sorry, I just read what he wrote.
Perhaps using the correct word might help people understand what he meant, but even then he's wrong
Anyway, I'm off to potato pistonheads. ( I was going to put read, but let's just use random words instead , seems to be the in thing on here!)
