I'm sure near enough everybody has been in this position. New car, rented, borrowed, whatever! Pull into the petrol station, then realise you don't know what side the filler is on!
A customer mentioned today, whatever side your fuel gauge is on, is the side the fillers on. Didn't believe it till i checked all the cars outside the garage and they had them all on the same sides!
So, is your fuel gauge on the same side as your filler?
Apparently some cars have a little arrow next to the fuel symbol pointing to which side the filler is. My old Focus MK1 had it, not sure if the ST has though never checked I know it's on the right!
i dont matter what side its on because pumps have long enough hoses to reach over .
ive never understood the muppets that side waiting for one on their side when the other pumps are free.

Think some people are scared to get to close incase they wipe the pump out, either that or they dont want to chance it and look a twat when it doesnt reach

Didn't matter... they'd all run out before it dipped below 1/4 of a tank anyway and leave you stranded on the side of the motorway at night in the pissing rain, wanky old Ford shit.

+1.
My missus moans at me cause I always go to the free pump, pull abit further forward and just reach the hose along the back window.
I might look like a twat for being on the wrong side but you look like a twat for sitting and waiting. Mr Straight laces!
Just out of curiosity.. What would happen if you went to the pump on empty, put like Ł15 in, paid then went back to your car.. Go back into the shop and say "I had that much fuel in when i came in here, i just wanted to top it up a little, no fuel must have came out the nozzle"

Is there any way they can check or what?
Yes can check mechanical totes if they make use of that system or check wet stock, I would be surprised of any petrol station took your word for it as although it can happen it rarely does

It is likely they would report you for theft and you may end up prosecuted and with a criminal record.

i do this, i have a black car and i dont want the hose rubbing on the rear screen/boot lid/bumper. & i dont really want to hold it with one hand cos it's dirty from where its been sat on the forecourt floor covered with diesel!

youll also find disposable gloves at the pumps for those like yourself but ive never seen a pump where the hose lies on the floor, they usually retract back into the holder.
by the time i've put a pair of gloves on and found the bin to put them in afterwards i might aswell just waited for the pump on the correct side to the car!
But while we are on the subject why dony more people pay at the pump? And even more annoying why oh why do people do a weeks shopping in the petrol station when theres a cue of traffic outside!
Its not what side the gauge is on.... isnt it.. When you look at the gauge there the little petrol pump icon it, whichever side of the icon the little nozzle is in.. That's the side your filler cap is on?

That's a myth as said above, on most cars they have an arrow pointing to which side the filler is.
First thing I check on a car/van I don't normally use, is where the filler cap is! Although guarenteed when it comes to flling up, I'm on auto-pilot so go straight to the side my car is
Worst vehicle I ever drove for this problem was a Merc sprinter, I ended up leaving the petrol station and finding a layby to investigate further as I had been at the pumps for a while walking round and round looking for the filler...You have to open the passenger door to open the flap for the filler, great for security, not great if you've never driven one and need to fill up, lol

Nope not on mine, everything is the opposite, no arrow either
