Rolling Roads - Tell us your stories...
Hi Guys,
This should make for an interesting topic, rolling roads.
We have all been to them and seen problem after problem, so tell us yours?
Operator problems... cooling problems... car fell off... car blew up... car made 700bhp on a T2... Run down losses were 700 bhp on your 900bhp Fiesta... Pet hates? Lets talk about them.

As usual, it is only as good as the operator, and there are lots of people around with the funds to buy/lease/rent one with minimal knowledge of how to actually use it.
Best one I saw was a car run up to the limiter with the handbrake still on , cue two glowing white hot discs & a minor pad fire
They are a tool to give repeatable comparisons, people get too hung up about 5-10bhp or lbs/ft from dyno to dyno, there is always going to be a calculation error/ % difference for every set of circumstances.

There truck rollers the two rollers are a lot further apart! so the wheel sits a lot deeper in them theres no way you would pull your self out of them with a few quick blasts But getting a wobble on can be a bit iffy lol. Ill agree not the best idea but still passed the time and no harm done

Must be one of the few people never to have an issue with an RR!
Funniest one was turning up to a Scooby RR day in my ratty classic shape wrx with the bonnet bent to fuck from where it flew open at 50mph, the front bumper cracked and the number plate hanging off This was the first time I'd ever met anyone there so made a good first impression lol. Car went on the rollers and I'll was called in to be told there was a small water leak and ask if I was happy to run it, I said go ahead, worst that could happen is it blows up By this time everyone had gathered round to watch it blow up I guess and it promptly pulled 300bhp! I was the most shocked person there, one person actually applauded! lol. Beat several much nicer cars and got the award for car of the day from the dyno operator as even he couldn't believe it. I was pretty happy with that!

numty who set up my twin 45 2.0 Zetec powered mk3 escort:
phonecalls as i was walking arround for 5 hours!
no.1 the usual, "it needs a set of plugs mate" i put genuine platinum FoMoCo ones in about 3 minutes before i left for the Rollers
no.2 "the carbs are well out of balance" no they werent
no.3 "the fueling is all over the place, it needs jetted correctly" ok, i dont know this 100%, sort it out
no.4 "we cant get any power out of it, 120bhp max, think its loosing compression" it did 192bhp on MFi about a month ago on another set of rollers after i put the cams in and has only done 200 miles since
"ok let us try again"
no.5 "all done you can come back now, we got good results" no problem, is it still Ł120? "no but we will sort something out for you"
have i got a power graph? "no, the printer is broken"
what power did it do? about 200? "no, we only managed 132bhp@5000rpm"
fuck off........... "honestly, its got nothing left"
how has it lost 60bhp by bolting a set of carbs on? "it happens"
................................ i was not a happy bunny!
he did not get the Ł400 he wanted but the Ł120 he quoted me and a mouthfull of abuse
ST170 engine with cams and 45`s, easy 200bhp, revved to 8000rpm and he only revved it to 5000, why? numpty.
never had another car on a set of rollers after that, probebly never will again except for power runs
rolling roads are only for pub talks and bollock swinging IMO
but good for diagnosing under load missfires and management problems
and this one time, at band camp........ i was at PTS in Luton, maby?! anyway doing a Fast Ford roller shoot, somewhere near there anyway
picture this, mk3 RS1600i, blueprinted, cammed, the bollocks of a well set up race spec motor, did 120.1bhp
my rusty old RS1600i, dizzy conversion and propperly shagged radiator, ashley exhaust, did 121.3bhp no reason for it, and matey with the race spec one was not fuckin happy, was well funny
Big thing on an Audi forum a few weeks ago, lots of cars down on power for no reason and a couple of cars mysteriously very well up for mods done, engine dyno is only true reading of power IMO
also, this will lighten the mood

no hates from me ive been on dyno dynamics, dastek, rototest, i think maha and dyna pack and they are awesome with a competant operator.
il put it this way during mapping i want my supra to run to the limiter in 5th which is 1.1 170 mph, without hireing an airfield it cant be done so a dyno is needed.
and tbh even on an airfield you have no actual comparison of output only ur butt, a dyno CAN give repeatable comparable results for tuneing which is exactly whats needed for setting an engine up.
also for the record i had my last gtr set up 100% on a dyna pack and it drives faultless, closed loop is disabled in the ecu and it cruises at 14 - 15 afr, ive had my mate follow me and i have literally no smoke out of the exhaust even when backing off, all the twin turbo shuffle was mapped out that it had, a 420 hub hp car that drives like stock 100% mapped on a dyna pack, thats no pub talk bolloxs those are the facts.

Im sure a few will remember a oversight at PE last year when the dyno operator forgot to re fasten the hose they removed when hooking up to the dyno on a few cars, It was the same day cossie4i won biggest power on the day too which he has not let anyone forget

Awesome thread.
I've never been to a RR either but from what I read - on a regular basis - it's full of disappointment and broken dreams (not to mention parts).
That face plant - ouch - bet that hurt in't mornin

dynopack limited to 2200rpm at hubs so depends on gearing
but you dont need to test 5th,on our dyno i can load it as much in 3rd/4th as 5th if we can get traction

I had my xr4i on the rollers, made 160 horses running terrible lean, but was for our track car, so, only a mid silencer, and a aluminum tube from the silencer, so, the exhaust measuring thingie was about 25 cm from the point where the two pipes became one, and after the second run the measuring thing just burnt away, so running lean eh... After getting the fuelling right it made 188.8 horses. The next car was a dirt racer volvo 2.0 litre t4 with about 400 horses, also running lean, and the thing melted a piston, slamming a rod trough the block, almost crapped my pants!
And last, a brisca f1 on the rollers, wasnt running quite right, but was making 650 horses... Running on 7 cilinders, the dyno couldnt make any figures with 8 cilinders, becouse it only made burnouts on the dyno, got some movies somewhere!

PassionFord Post Whore!!
I went to power engineering and wasnt best happy.
I was paying by the hour for a full checkover of the car.
They spent at least 45 mins looking for a fuel pressure gauge, (time they tried to charge me for) didnt check any ecu sensors especially charge temp as i thought i had issues with it so asked if they would check it before going and was told they would.
A few other things i expected to be checked that werent, but cant remember now.

Dynapack can easily run over 170mph.
I was on one once and had to use 5th gear as torque exceeded the dyno's rating in 4th gear. max rpm in 5th would have seen around 185-190mph at that time.
If my maths are right, that would be around 2450rpm at the hubs.
Most roller based dyno's wont go that high though. Although maybe the big single roller's like Dynojet might allow higher road speeds to be seen.

Happily retired
Been on 3 times.
First was back in 2002 my 500bhp conversion made 399.4bhp atw this was a tad more than Mike Rainbird so i was OK to claim 500bhp the same as he did. We set a Topspeed record of 183.3mph with that engine. I now know Power was probably as low as 460 & not higher than 480bhp they were true bullshit days.
2nd time was in 2011 when we did a practice run for a RR shoot. The car made 803bhp fly, but holding it was draining Power. The tyres were let down the straps were tightened & then the tyres pumped to 50 psi it was the only way.
3rd time was much the same as the 2nd but this time 809bhp.
There will be a 4th as the RR now has the correct high Power straps so next time we will use Nitrous.
Its all uneventfull as the vid shows thats the 809run.

Rolling road only as good as the operator, I took mine for a set up and the operator couldn't solve my misfire and said the burning oil on over run was normal for cossies, had a usual stage 1 output of about 270bhp but was very unhappy with car after it never ran so bad, took it to nms shortly after and had a road set up and it was much better although Karl advised oil was due to bottom end which rolling road operator didn't know, it ran great but since then have rebuilt the engine and oil consumption is now nil, just deciding what level to take it to now and get a set up again but defo would go for road set up my experience has put me off rolling roads for life
