Chassis Dipping / Stripping?
As title really.
Im looking at getting a chassis/shell dipped to remove all the paint and rust as its alot quicker than sanding or shot blasting etc.
anyone know anywhere in or around Manchester that can do it?
i can only find this place in Birmingham
http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/e...t-process.html
has anyone had this done to there shell? is it worth doing?
cheers matty

theres a place in nottingham called prostrip and its pretty reasonable at Ł750 for dipping and Ł750 for zinc priming.
the only problem with surface process is the cost and the fact that theres a 6 month waiting list to get the car zinc primed dipped
and at nearly Ł2700 its alot of money just to clean a shell.
they said to me we can strip the shell next week but you will have to wait to get it dipped primed (6 months) so you can take it away and let it rust then we can charge you another Ł370 to get the shell dipped again ready for priming
when prostrip dip the shell its got a anti rust inside so it doesnt rust up again before priming
cheers paul

Why such a price difference? Is it a different process? Called up surface processing a couple of months ago and they wanted Ł200 to dip a mk3 fiesta tailgate and another Ł70 to zinc prime it.

i will give you a quick warning about acid dipping
1, if you dont have a way of recoating areas such as inside chassis rails then dont get it done (spl's e coating is pretty substandard at doing this as mentioned above)
2, bare in mind that unless your shell is the 1 in a 1000 typa that drains perfectley after being dipped then you will get the acid eventually acting as a paint stripper when leaking out of seams, could take months, could take years but WILL happen
imo spend a little extra time with the d.a and hand sanding or shot blating and a little extra time waxoiling afterwards and save yourself Ł100's

i live in the street next to them, they use ovens to burn the paint off most of the stuff they do, they only actually acid dipp the shell , plus they offer no coating service, however the service they do provide is very good and every day when i pass them to go to work its always nice to see a mk1, mk2 escort or mini outside waiting for treatment

cheers for the input guys
ive herd alot about the affects of the acid if it doesnt get cleared properly which is quite worrying.
have you used them before of know anyone who has used them? on there website they say they bake it too after its been dipped which makes me thinks there will be less chance of acid being stored in chassis rails etc
only reason i want my shell dipped is because ive bought a group n cosworth motorsport shell and its been stood outside for abit so has some surface rust underneath.. i wanted to dip it to make sure that there was no surface rust from moisture else where

Can vouch for pro strip in Nottingham. Didn't have it primered, took it away as a bare shell and red oxide'd the good stuff in the workshop. all the bits i didn't paint rusted over the same week. If your acid dipping you really need to crack on with the paint! did it just after christmas and its been fine since! (Still not painted properly yet though)

Baking the shell after dipping to dry the acid out has no effect whatsoever. As soon as a bit of water gets in there, it will re-activate the acid and it will cause problems. I think the only way you can be certain not to get corrosion from inside box sections would be to hot galvanize the shell, there won't be many firms around with a hot dip tank big enough as it would have to have literally tons of zinc in it.

Acid-dipping was always a favourite of the rally & rallycross teams as it stripped the shell back to bare. They were not bothered about the longterm effects of the acid in the cavitiies as most shells only last a season or two, maybe three at the most.
TBH there's nothing wrong with a descent media blast, it used to be a sand underneath and walnut shell on panels up top but i think H&S has outlawed sand due to Silica poisoning. Soda Blasting seems to be the current solution.
I've had a few shells blasted over the years, always had them etch-primed straight away and them given a primer coat over the top of that as soon as possible.
