So with my s1 all but done I'm making a start on my graphite rs1600.
Its going to be a road legal track car and rwd
(mainly because I don't want to shell out for expensive 4wd gearboxes and its less things to go wrong)
Anyway what engine does anyone think is best to go for, needs to be, cheap, turbo, reliable at around 300bhp, not bothered on make.
Thoughts so far have been
1.8 vag turbo - (unsure on what gearbox I could use? maybe martin could chip in?)
Saab Turbo - Unsure which engine? ppc supposed to have done a feature on one so may pick a few issues up?
Volvo 740 turbo - hard finding the earlier model with strong internals?
YB - no real downsides apart from cost
Rover turbo?? Not really got a clue here lol
XE?
Would be easier to get a written off car so I know its all there and no issues with wiring bits missing and I can sell parts to recuperate, but even crashed tatty saffs are doing good money now.
Any other thoughts?

ca18det (1.8T) or sr20det (2.0T) out of the nissan s13's and s14's? thats whats going in my mk2 escort in the next few years. very tuneable and reliable, most drift lads run them, and cheap as chips to get a complete car.

I'll have a spare 2.3 volvo engine and gearbox going soon. The one in my 940 should be 280bhp with cheap second hand bolt on parts. Under rated engine imo.

Will let you know mate. Got my base car, a spares car with the bolt on bits I need a spare box and engine and a few other bits all for a grand. Bargain! If you don't go for the Volvo lump I may have to find a Capri to stick the leftover bits in
