I did one of these threads last year and with your opinions I ended up buying a Deisel Passat for the old man, he still loves it and a great car for the money.
I now want a new car, budget 5K again, have had my ST200 for five and a half years now and even though she still pulls heads on the road shes becoming an old girl, I've never kep a car so long as it has ticked all the boxes.
But fuel is getting silly now
can be £300 plus some months and not even 1000 miles lol
I need a fanily car which has some poke, can tow a car trailor and doesnt bore the life out of me!
I got the old man a 2L TDSI Passat GSI Sport thingy lol nice car! but if I had one I think i'd end up changing wheels lol
Never modded the ST one bit so would like another car I wont modify, but got to be a deisel! MPG is what I now want![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)
Prolly be a couple of months before I buy as got so much shit on atm so got time to shop also.
Thanks in advance.

Seem to have a lot of troubles though?pumps/injectors etc, general engine management issues plus these issues and their publicity seems to have killed their 2nd hand values, which may not be a bad thing I suppose.
Volvo D5 estate would be my choice, think their touching 200bhp and a trillion lb/ft once a minor remap is done.
Very reliable and strong too.

Skoda octavia vrs estate?
Ok it's a petrol but they are fairly good on juice and unless you are hammering up and down the motorway all the time the overall running costs won't be too different.
D5 Volvo and BMW 330d are also a good shout. Even a 320d with a remap will be close to 200bhp which isn't too bad for a family wagon.
Gavin.

Done 150k across 3 separate st tdci's now and not had any of the above mentioned faults TOUCH WOOD!!
I did have a 2.0 tdci and that wasn't the best, first the clutch and DMF, then the injectors, then it got traded in lol
The D5 is a lovely beast of an engine with a growl similar to a V8...driven a mapped one and the torque was superb!

My dad has run an 06 S80 D5 Auto since nearly new and even though he's not the slowest of drivers, his overall average MPG is 46mpg... which is phenominal given the size of the car, acceptable performance (still trying to get him to map it..) and the auto box.
It's got c105k on the clock now and it's still extremely tight to drive, no rattles, wobbles, breakages. The only thing he's had problem with in 5 years/90k miles is a slightly iffy headlight main beam connector, that's it.
I would really think about a V70 D5 if I wanted a reliable, comfortable, economical car to smoke around in.
Cheers,
Grant

One of the VAG group diesels, BMW.
To be fair my missus has a 57 Clio diesel and that thing amases me how good it is on fuel, not the nicest thing in the world to drive about but not really any worse than any other modern "hug the trees recycle everything" car.

ST TDCI. I sold mine in September at 100k,I had it since 8k and I had only put one set of brakes and an egr valve on it it all that time. Fantastic car, like any car, look after it and it will look after you. I liked it so much and miss it so much I am buying another at the end of this week. Ticks all the boxes for me. You won't go wrong!!!
