Default Car for my old man - suggestions please.

Right ho.....

Budget £5k max but happy to spend less.
Mileage 65k max ( he has 100k phobia so needs to be far from it )
Manual.
Petrol.
Not 4x4 but 4wd is fine.
Pref not an estate.
Something Mondeo size at biggest and Focus size as smallest.
New as poss but he's 'realistic'.
Wants something with a bit of guts but nothing silly.
He does about 6k a year.
Wants something 'nice' which can mean anything really....

My list so far that he hasn't ruled out yet.
Mazda 3 2.0 Sport 55 plate
Vectra 1.8 VVT Sri 57 plate
X Type Sport 05 plate
Saab 9-3 53 plate

I like the Lexus and the Leon idea.... hadn't thought of the Lexus and didn't think I'd get a later Leon.

For me personally there's only two cars I'd consider within that criteria.

An E46 Saloon, take your pick of engines or an ST220.

Would have to be Performance Blue for me, but just as an example

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3737645.htm

If I shopped around I'd hope to get a 2003/2004 6spd in Performance Blue, sub 70k for £4000 private.

Yes a Sierra Cosworth. Widely regarded as one of the best/coolest cars of all time.

Was there a point you were making?

I bet deep down they are

I dont know many people who don't regard a 3dr very highly in the cool stakes.

I'm guessing you have a Skoda though? If so that'll explain the issue here

Cheers guys...

I'd like him to have an ST220 to be honest but he'll prob not go down that route.

Skoda - to be honest I understand the appeal but no thanks.... ropey as fuck inside. New shape one is loads nicer though and if one of those were in budget I would look at that.

ST170 more economical option.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3623093.htm

Would hope to get an 04 with 60k for around £3k, or up to £3700 for one with seriously low mileage. I'd hope to get the one above for £3750 cash tops.

Had my IS200 since November and love it mine was 3750 from Lexus in sheffield 53k miles and 1 owner. Its a manual which is great for when wanting to give it some but the auto day to day is a lot better super smooth would recommend that he tries one very underated although they drink fuel for fun and useless in snow.
