The obvious one that comes to mind is the swirl flaps. They are redesigned after a certain year but people still seem to remove them for the safety of the engine.

My mate has just bought a 58 plate 525d sport and loves it, he says it's quite nippy too.

The blanks to remove them are around Ł40 and a couple of hours to remove the inlet manifold and change them.

Also worth while checking the engine temps are reached quickly as these have two stats in them and unless the engine reaches around 90 degrees fairly quickly will make fuel consumption worse.

I have the bigger brother in the 535D and love it.

We have and have had the current and previous shape 520d and 530d on fleet at work. The former is average in the performance stakes, comfortable enough too. The latter though is absolutely superb, quick as you'd need in a daily driver, economical for the size of the engine and good fun too. I would make the assumption a 525d would land somewhere in the middle.

I'm really not keen on run flat tyres, they ruin tide quality, add noise and tramline too.

Depending on how old you are looking at, drive the current shape E class with the AMG pack. A very nice car to drive over distance.

what year/model?

ive been told that the 525d E39 is the same on fuel as the 530d but obviously the 530d is quicker. thats the main reason i went for the 530d.

another common issue is thermostats, quick fix tho
