well you may struggle to get a car for £400 that's worth taking on a track day but no you don't need mot or tax if its not used on the road.
however £600 will get you a saxo vtr, 1.7 puma or escort gti jobs a good en

Nothing worse than turning up to a track day with a shit car, having a shit day, ruining it for everyone and going home thinking it was shit and a waste of money.
Better - buy something half decent to start with as a minimum change the fluids and put a decent set of brake pads on it and have a good day.....

The last time I did a load of track days I did the same as this.... started off with a budget of £600 to get a Saxo and after looking into it decided to do it properly and actually enjoy it and didn't spend a shit load more.
I ended up buying a 172 as follows:
Car - 104k - £1400
Tax - £100 ish
Insurance - £200 ish (2k miles third party only)
Oil cooler kit £250 ish
CL Brake Pads £130 ish
A few odds and sods and fluid changes £150 ish
Set of spare 15x7 Oz F1's £200
Set of used A048's £100 ish
Total £2530 ish
I did a few track days and sold the car with 114k on it a year later for £1k
I got £250 for the wheels
I got £150 for the oil cooler.
Total £1400
So it cost me £1100 plus petrol and fees and consumables and it was great.
Cheap, fun, reliable, safe, capable, enjoyable.

i would love to take my e36 round a track as it has a small diff fitted and the acceleration is fantastic, its got coilovers so really just brakes and tyres to sort it.
Oh and i need to fix the overheating issue which looks like an air lock but its a fucker to bleed out

Shings' post pretty much says it all IMO.
If you think you'll enjoy it, then you will. THE END.
I think your price is very optimistic though.
I think for that price you won't enjoy it, pretty sure that will spend more time in the pits,it's got to take some pretty serious abuse and lets face it a £400 car for the road is a bit dodgy let alone track. But fair play if you pull it off.
I reckon closer to a grand minimum by the time you've got some decent brakes on whatever you buy.
About £1500 to have something half decent and that you won't be worried it's not going to make the next bend lol.

If you mean a Mk5/6 then plenty would recommend them yeah.
But they'd be deluded. Don't get me wrong I used to have one,I like them they are great cars for character but lots of other newer cars in better condition for the money, if you look at other makes but that's opening up a big can of worms.
(Waits for the 2K defenders pmsl).
HALF DECENT 2K = At least £1500. Plenty of other makes of car for that money,in better condition and more capable out the box for track.
Sorry but it's true.

There is NO point doing a track day to sit in the pits with a fooked car, baring accidents.
There is also NO point being the person who halts everyones fun because you drop oil on the track or break down because you're driving a shed thats not capable.
For £400 you wouldn't even get decent road tyres.
