Default How to spot a failing DMF?

As above, off to view a few mondeos (mainly deisels) on the weekend, and given the price range were looking at,the cars we're viewing fall into the higher mileage bracket. Having read all the topics and horror stories of clutches failing and there costs, we want to make sure we don't fall foul of the repair bills.

Also whats the diffrence between TDCI and TDDI. is it as obvious as 1 is just the older common rail injection?

Failing dmf is often heard as a rattle when you turn off the engine.....thats what etis procedure tells us to listen for. You can also feel it through the clutch pedal when you take up the initial slack...feel a light pulsing under foot.

One is the newer Common Rail.
The other one isn't common rail

There's also a known common fault with misfire enabling management light and as injectors are coded to ecu is a very expensive fix, think a friend of mine was quoted Ł1800 + vat at dealers and he can't find anyone else who can fix it, think ford want to change all injectors and pump + other stuff, then ecu needs setting up to new injectors, the car isn't worth the repair cost and will probably get scrapped and other than that fault it's a cracking car

Failing dmf can be diagnosed by a juddering when pulling away might not be very severe but it is noticible but obviously depending on how knackered it is!

If in doubt then factor it in!

I've changed loads of dmf's and another thing is to listen for a metallic sound as you put the vehicle in gear, and if it feels stiff going in to 1st. You can get all the obvious noises you'll easily diagnose but sometimes the dmf sort of locks itself and won't give your normal dmf noises but it just won't feel right.

Any change of noise when you depress the clutch at idle is a bad sign.

If you're buying a higher mileage one (over 150k) then I wouldn't even consider one that hadn't already had a new clutch/DMF and replacement injectors. At that kind of mileage big bills are potentially around the corner, so you could be buying a world of pain.

I'd rather buy one with 190K on the clock that had had recent injectors and DMF, than one that had done 90K and was on the original components.

They're excellent cars when they're working, but pure evil when they go wrong.

We have replaced parts with second hand tested components for Ł1000
Usually the pump that starts breaking up and going into the injectors, so if an injector goes then usually not worth just replacing it as that's just the start of it!

You can get the injectors remanufactured from mondeo spares IIRC for Ł120 an injector and anyone with a snap on diagnostics machine can code the new injectors for him so shouldnt be that expensive.

As for the pump, who knows. Tho knowing ford they just want to change everything

There is loads of people on the ST mondeo forum who have just had injector problems which is common causing poor MPG and smoke etc, fitted theses injectors and prob has been solved.

I wouldnt let that put you off. Any modern diesel can suffer from DMF problems.

I have had 2 mondeos, bought one with 90k on it and has 160k on it still going fine

My ST mondeo has 85k on it now and still perfect.

The DMF and clutch kit for a 2.0 mondeo is only around 300-400 for an LUK. Tho the ST is around 700-800 for the kit. Not sure if its same for all 2.2 ones tho.

we've lined up to view an octavia diesel this evening 87k, full history, etc etc.. the mondys where ok but just seemed a bit lack luster, the best 1 by far was a 130,6speed only downside to that was a fair scrape down the drivers side
