Default just spoken to oli at NMS on the phone about turbo's..

As above, just gave oli a quick ring to check how my engine build is coming on, when it took the car up to NMS on saturday he said my turbo was leaking oil which it was..So i just rung him and he said he will get some prices on a few turbo's and get back to me..

I mentioned going for a Gt28 or T34 for the build but he said they both lack in punch and are a bit gutless..

My question is, what other turbo's are out there? What we will he ring me back saying do you think?

Bearing in mind this is for 300ish Bhp

Thanks, Joe

i thought t34.48 is perfect for a 350-380bhp set up, from what iv read off owners on here.

As above, read lots of times about nms using t34's of some description for the bigger bhp builds?!
Not many other easy options bar a worked t3 i wouldn't have thought.

Cant think why he doesnt like the GT28 at that power level TBH, seems quite a logical choice.

Joe, go with what you want mate...T34.48 doesn't lack in punch imo, top-end yes but if you're after a nice strong 340-360 that's your blower imo. Been there done it...

Ive never had any issues but its a bit like anything in life we all have choices.

Every car ive been in that they have spec'd has been phenominal and im not just saying that as i use them for my engine work. To be fair Karl knows his stuff.

Which is your engine i was only there today looking at stuff for my Escort

Sorry its for a 1.6 cvh. I didnt hear him wrong, he may have just been busy and in a rush, im sure he will come back to me with a T34 or something, i just mentioned GT28 and he said no and compared it to a T34..I wasnt moaning about it or anything, really i was just asking the question of 'is there anything else out there' because i didnt think there was really..

Thanks, Joe

Quite frankly you've got 2 options here.

1 listen to the man you're paying your money to, who has arguably produced and proved time and time again for many many years that he knows what he's doing with the engine you have chosen.

2 listen to the internet

By all means get peoples views but most of them wont agree with NMS because its the 'in thing' to do and has been for ages.

NMS is my first choice full stop and that wont ever change.

Shings you cant argue with that at all. My views exactly there always seems to be this whole negative thing surrounding them.

Oli knows plenty about the RS turbo's trust me. Karls knowledge of the cvh is second to none and many people cant hack that simple fact.

The other way of looking at things is they deal with plenty of idiots who want power for fuck all and just waste there time. Personally i wouldnt let anyone else tune my cvh no matter how much it costs.

Joe what ever turbo you end up with it will be correctly spec'd for your engine and thats all that matters

I spoke to oli today, and we have agreed on a custom spec turbo, its based on a T34 but NMS make there own shafts and blades etc and don't have a name for it, so that explains it.

Thanks Joe

Default best way to get 190-200hp (1.6cvh)

hi there, just reading with intrest joes thread on turbo's to suit his cvh (in excess of 350hp) and got me thinking, what turbo would be suitable and also what sort of work would be needed to get a good useable 190-200hp. i understand the valves are already big in a cvh and the std cam is very good. is it a good idea to have the cyl head ported or just blueprinted. i know the hp i mentioned is easy to obtain, im just intrested to hear how people go about it. still on mfi btw. cheers matt

why not a gt25, seems to be the faster spooling turbo that should pull your target power.

i totally agree, i'd definitely be thinking gt or another ball bearing turbo though, seems the gt25 is a good 300bhp turbo and the gt28 is a 350bhp turbo, on a given engine of course.

There will be a very good reason why Karl still chooses to use a custom t34 IMO

you would think oli and karl would know whats best by now, it's not like it's the first one they have built. tim butch's car was just mint along with olie's own car, you would need to go a long way before it get's much better. with the efforts C&B went to and NMS pushing the top seeds up and up for many years they were great times and masive gains were made by both with there efforts.

Because for only 300bhp a T34 would be a lag monster, plain and simple.

A good 300bhp turbo could have full boost around 2-2500rpm. Will a T34 do that ?

The OP would need to be very very specific about his goals, and his driving style and use for the car.

I think what NMS are saying is that 300bhp is gutless, and I'd pretty much agree. Compared to more power, it is gutless lol But does the OP want fast spooling low rpm torque ? A nice relaxed spread of power ? Is it a light or heavy vehicle ? What sort of traction ?
Closest comparison I can make is driving a friends Rousesport with a small turbo. And having the small turbo actually made it very nice for normal driving.. Was it quick ? No, but it was nice to drive. Far better compared to a standard car with the ancient old T3 yet overall they had the same power ( Rouse might have been slightly more actually )

So what does the driver of the car actually want ?
