Default Transfering Number Plates?

I've just left a deposit on a BMW 330ci and go to pick it up next weekend. I also need to get my private reg off my fiesta and put it on the new car.

My question is, if I go down to my local dvla office one day next week with all the required documents for both cars, do they sort it out there and then? I transferred plates a couple of years ago but did it all by post which ended up taking nearly 7 weeks which I thought was ridiculous, just want to know if I go down to the office and do it, can I actually transfer the plates over that same day?

Any info appreciated.

I'll try next week anyway, just want it sorted quicker this time as I've got someone wanting my car so need to get the original plate back on.

Will update next week and let you know if it can still be done.
