Astra 2.0 Turbo
I've seen this on pistonheads for sale http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3581929.htm
I'm selling my Focus on ebay (not giving further info in case am accused of advertising) and was wanting something with good mpg but still quite quick. A pal was saying Astras like this one should be able to get about 35mpg mixed driving, maybe 40 on a run. Seems a bit optomistic to me but has anyone had a similar car can comment on fuel economy on these.

There isn't a hope in Hell that one would get those figures. It's a breathed on C20 LET from a Calibra/Cavalier Turbo not the more up to date Z20 LET. Should think it will be damned quick though.
Problem is, being an Astra sitting in a Portaloo would seem, luxurious in comparison.

I have a MK4 Astra GSi as my daily drive. Completely standard (197bhp) and I get 40-43mpg on a run back and forth to Wales, 35mpg back and forth to work.
It's more than enough fun as a daily drive.
As said though, the one on PH is not the more modern Z20LET as found in the mk4 turbo's like mine. £3500 should get you a real GSi younger than that one.

A c20let with converted to fwd f28 6speed box will be good on fuel, as long as its running properly, ive had many c20let's in nova's- Corsa's and all have been good on fuel due to the light weight cars, ive also had a couple of z20lets ie mk4 gsi and 888 there not so good fuel wise and only 5 speed, i now have a nurburgring vxr and i would say its not bad on fuel av 30mpg and its around 300bhp
It also depends on how you drive.

35mpg sounds reasonable to me, although I suspect that particular example may be over fuelling the moment you get out of closed loop as the vxr injectors are a little big for the chipset he is running.

This is a random Q but following on the Astra theme: My girlfriend fancies a 2005-> Astra Turbo. They do a 1.6T and a 2.0T that are similar power and 0-60.
Are there any reasons for/against either? In the car places we've been looking round there's a few of each and I wondered what the reasons for having both engines available like this were?

Was the c20let I was saying that 35mpg in a lighter (earlier) astra was realistic for, book for the calibra with that engine was 30mpg, but in a fwd only and lighter car you can see better.
Book figure for the z20let coupe is 32mpg IIRC

I'm just considering all options I have. I was considering a Leon Cupra R or a diesel ideally but 35- 40mpg would be brilliant and if I could run a 280- 300bhp car for that mpg then obviously am gonna look at it. Worth a viewing Chip or Vx experts?
