Best things to look out for is water pump and cam belt has been done as pump has plastic impeller and these tend to break up and cause over heating issues. If your going for remap I recommend you change coil packs before hand as these are known to fail after remap just preventative maintenance. Try get one with cruise controll , hids etc

coil packs, bottom arm bushes, water pump, pretty much the only thing that goes wrong with them and none are massively expensive to replace. a simple remap will see you in mk1 frs power and further upgrades again aren't that badly priced.
the interior can feel a little cheap but then it is a cheap car for what you get, it'll return 40mpg on a steady run and do it in relative comfort. had mine for 2 years and wouldn't have changed it had some bint not decided to use it for target practice. got a mk2 vrs now which is a even better car but had i not got it at the price i did i'd have happily had another mk1.
here it is before target practice:
here it is after the womans suicide attempt:
was a heavy old impact which left the driver of the other car in hospital for a very long time yet i was lucky enough to walk away with bruises and a bit of a bad back.

love mine had it since selling the escos in 2005 170k on it now and still on original engine/turbo and box. first clutch at 149k!!
also worth changing the oil strainer at next service as there prone to block as there very narrow.
best car i've ever owned out of the 400+ i've had

Sorry I’m a little late on this thread but here's my input:
Good points:
1_ Very smooth to drive, the 1.8t engine (180bhp) pulls the car along very nicely
2_ V tuneable, massive amounts of aftermarket parts available
3_ Tons of space in the back / the boot is huge
4_ Reasonable running costs and reliability
Bad points
1_ Leather and white cloth interior is crap , the white gets very dirty
2_ White carpet ! , again looks like crap after a while
3_ Low front bumper catches all over the place. Mine got smashed TWICE on speed bumps
4_ Rear view is a JOKE ... headrests obscure view / back window is hard to see out of
5_ Damp affects the electric window connector behind the front door panel. This causes the electric windows to go funny
Overall a good solid car

Common faults on the Vag 1.8 t engine (as fitted to VRS, Golf GTI SEat, Audi etc) Oh and my Octavia 4x4.
Crankcase ventilation system pipes fall apart, all pipes need changing.
Oil pickup pipe clogs if it hasn't been run on fully synthetic oil and changed regularly, if the oil filler cap looks sludgy walk away.
Pickup pipe needs changing anyway as a preventative. Ł12 for pickup, Ł5 for sump sealer plus half a day to do it
Oil dipstick tube snaps when you look at it, change this as well Ł3 half an hour to do it.
Coil packs fail, keep one in the car as a spare, there is a recall from Vw so they may have been changed.
Crank position sensor fails, done mine today Ł10 plus couple of hours, if it wasn't freezing and snowing..
Also,
Rear footwell can fill with water, easy fix reseal rear door window motor mounting plate.
Drivers electric window switch snaps off, loads on ebay , fitted to Golfs etc as well.
If it's got EML light on don't worry most, Octavias have..
