As above the missus's fiesta is up for sale and we're replacing it with some that is 4 wheel drive and comfy for 4/5 people, as well as being decent on motorways.... The X5's seem to fit the bill, in particular the 3.0 diesel sport, they can be picked up for around 8k now for a 2002/2003 model.
Has anyone had one before, anything to look out for, as we'll be towing a horsebox I presume a manual is the better option to go for? Also would remap make a big difference as with other BMW diesels?!
Cheers

Turbos are prone fail, strong history and evidence of proper maintenance is a must, check the breather. Check for oil leaks from everywhere on the car.
The heater blower is prone to fail.
It's a big heavy car and MPG isn't great from the diesel.
I had a 4.4 V8 and it was a great car, but they're very heavy on servicable parts and there are a few things you need to keep an eye out for and you need to keep on top of them.

I Use my.dads 57plate, 3.o petrol auto in grey and was.actually surprised the mpg it returned. Also tyres... His has 20inch run flats = not cheap. Not sure if the older ones have i drive but his had a new computer at 3 years old as it was kicking out of gear randomly.. Bmw were perfect with their service with this all under warrenty. I have already told him i want it when he sells too as iv just had the rims refurbished in aston martin grey too.. can upload pics if wanted

My dad also had a 3.0 diesel, to be honest it was a great car in the time he had it, only problem he had was worn shocks. Though this was 5 years ago now. Otherwise nice and comfertable
For the money they go for now seem a great car imo.

Im not a fan of the manual ones, but the auto ones are nice. The earlier 5 speed boxes go wrong. Bmw say they are a sealed for life box, but only designed to last 100,000 miles?! The 6 speed box's fitted to the later models are much better and dont seem to fail. But obviously, as its a beemer, turbo failure is common, so get cleaning your strainer! Also check for rear diff noises on the road. Only ever had them go on petrol models tho?

4.8iS X5 what a monster to drive, and if you can get a 3.0S same spec etc then id have one tomorow, but when you get in one, your head tilts back slightly and you are of a higher being, defanitly
