What would you class as a acceptable thickness for a carbon panel to fit the underside of my car ?

I believe it's 300gsm 4x4 twill, something around .3mm i think he said doesn't mean much to me though.

The chassis has many points to attach it too and is dead flat from behind the engine to the back where the link boxes end.

Depending on the thickness we go for I may have enough spare to make up a undertray for the engine which would be handy so I'd like to make the most of it if I can.

Any advice would be appreciated

4x4 is the standard for pre preg, if its dry fabric you will be using be wary that it is a nightmare to work with due to its loose characteristics, also its a heavy weight.

If its prepreg (low or high temp) it will be fine, 2 layers of 300g should see a thikness of around 5mm.

We use 3 layers on most items like this, at the mo we have just finished the moulds for rear floor pans for the escort mk4, these will be made from 3 layers of 200g, infused with a thikness of .7mm.

it all depends on the purpose of the panel, if cosmetic and just to replace metal to save weight with no structural integrity required then less if obviously better but if the panel is going to be subjected to harsh conditions such as a full aerofoil style under side then I would either go with a carbon/aramid/carbon stack of the 4x4 you mentioned.

Experiment with a few small panels unless someone else is making them of ourse which could add cost for no reason, but in that case their own expertise should be enough to decide on the correct wy to go.

Any probs feel free to give us a call, working late all this week, got a twin custom gauge pod to finish for a fruity corsa :-( lol

exact replacements for the rear oem ones which will simply bond or bolt into place, hell of a weight saving for a small area.

Johnny if this is to flat floor the car then you can get a kevlar honey cone or a alloy one quite cheap and it takes a beating . then you can you use a 2x2 twill and a kevlar 200gsm to coat it under vacuum ! so a layer of carbon a layer of kevlar then honey cone then kevlar then carbon .We did buy a prepped sheet already done to fit the berg cup mazda 3 under build atm think it was around Ł200+vat

Thanks for the info guys, I passed on the info and the panels are being made as we speak.

Jay the floorpan cannot be any thicker than a few mm as the car has less than a few inches ground clearance. I've used the honeycomb stuff before as I worked for a company doing flat panels for all sorts of companies, we had a machine that would stretch the honeycomb out as it comes as large cube, only interesting part of it for me would be the carbon stuff but that was only once in a blue moon.

I'll let you know how it comes out, not sure I'll bother laquering it yet, will see what it looks like once its out of the oven.
