Default diff pics inside ......

this is the diff for my dutton project, ive opened it up its a 9" from a chevy c10 truck 1978, if i turn either wheel forward the other wheel either stays still or turns in the same direction which im assuming means its not an open diff ? am i right in thinking with an open diff that the wheels will turn in opposite directions when wheels are turned of the ground ?

im not sure wether welding up all the planet gears will make it solid locked or if it will still possibly slip on an lsd ?

If you turn one output shaft and the other goes in the same direction it means it's LSD

when i weld up the planet gears do i weld the planet gears to the end of the half shafts aswell ?

edit aaa ive just realised the centre planets are fixed to the crownwheel so once its welded will lock up the crownwheel side planet gear to the crownwheel.

It's an open diff.. called a "12 bolt" over here cause theres 12 bolts holding the cover on.... They can be strong, but there a bit on the heavy side. Loads of ratios for them and plenty of choices when it comes to "Posi" units for them....

If your turn one drive shaft and the other one turns in the same direction this doesn't mean it's an LSD.

If you try to turn the drive shaft opposite ways and it doesn't want to do this, it is an LSD.

For welding the differential, you can do it like this. Just weld all the planet gears together.

as per the above pic, but i had some 5mm thick steel cut to a rectangle and welded in the holes of the planet gears. so all 4 sides were welded not just the top and bottom. much stronger that way lol

Welding is rash.

LSD's for the yank stuff are so cheap, why not just buy one ? Or if you insist on a locked diff, either welded or otherwise. Cheapest correct way to do it is with a mini-spool

Although it will be horrific to drive as well as dangerous and scrub tyres like fuck.

If you run a locked diff and a shaft breaks. More than often, a big crash ensues.

With an LSD if a shaft breaks, you lose drive.

Ive run a spool in mine for a few months both on the road and strip. The only difference it made was to make the car horrible everywhere.
Times didnt change, traction didnt change, 60fts didnt change. And I'm just using a cheapish Ford Racing Torsen diff.

i used a 2.0l twincam sierra with a welded diff every day for over a year with no problems whatso ever.

the only time you noticed it was when parking or making tight turns, or when hanging the back out

granded the car was not exactly the most powerful thing in the world, but i wouldnt describe it as dangerous
