If you have use of it privately your tax code will drop £3000. (real cost to you is £600 if you earn less than £35k)
If your employer provides all fuel for private use free of charge, your tax code will drop another £550. (real cost to you £110 if you earn less than £35k)
If your employer charges you for private fuel used or you put your own fuel in or your employer charges you for private miles at around 14p per mile, then you don't get the £550 deducted but you do get the £3000 deducted.

I pay 10p a mile and £660ish a year on the tax code, never used to get charged a penny, fucking trackers and tax man, but still cheaper than using my own wheels

It's up to your employer to declare if you have private use and whether you pay towards the private use.
If the employer can't be bothered to monitor private use they do so at thier own risk.

No, it just depends if the employer is applying the tax correctly or if he hasn't had a tax inspection yet.
Lots of companies don't seem to realise that the taxman has way more powers to wander in and start checking company records than the cops could even dream of.
And, given the current economic climate, they are on a mission to maximise revenue so when they find an "anomaly", you can bet they are going to squeeze everything out of it.
