Question Cossie won't fire

Ok so here goes, i have a 4x4 saph cossie & was plodding along when it started to backfire then after about 15 mins it died altogether. The Rac man checked for a spark & said to me that when i turned the ignition on there was a spark but when cranked over there was no spark & said it was more than likely the ignition amp. So after spending 50 sheets on a new one it still would not fire. Iv'e checked all the obvious things like loose wires or broken wires & the fuel pump is priming, the only thing i can think of is maybe the phase sensor in the distributor or the crank
shaft sensor. Can anyone help or anyone had a similar problem before i waste more ££££££s on it, If not ill wait till bonfire night

Have you checked the coil itself? Also are all four lugs intact on the crank pulley?

Phase sensor would be my bet, happened to me on my old saff 4x4. For the price I'd get a sensor kit and replace them all.

No haven't checked the coil or lugs, I don't have a spare coil & not sure how to test it to see if its that. Once it stops raining ill get out there & investigate some more but it's all head scratching at the moment.

Hmmm yeah that sounds like good idea as im sure it is a sensor of some kind that's doing it, I have a spare crank sensor & gonna try that soon but would a faulty crank sensor cause it to backfire & then not fire at all ?

If that's the case, check the wires inside the cap as they are prone to corroding and shorting out. I am sure though the phase has nothing to do with ignition, only fueling as I said?

A similar thing happened to my 2wd it just died on me on my way home. it was turning over but not firing, i checked everything and I changed the coil, distributer arm and cap and in the end it was the crank shaft pulley, one of the lugs had broken off. A bugger of a job but i managed to do it on my own.

Thanks for the suggestions guys once this crap weather clears up ill go & look at it again. If a lug has broken would that have caused it to backfire & eventually die ?

At the risk of asking a potentially stupid question, what would cause the pulley lugs to "break off"? It's not like they're bearing any kind of load, they just pass in front of an inductive sensor. :S

Not really a common problem, but it's been known to happen, some idiots hit them when trying to remove the crank pulley, which of course does not help.

Well guys after going very deep today & checking things again i moved the crankshaft sensor wire & about half way up where the joiner plug is a wire popped off, I thought i had accidentally pulled it off so i rewired it all up again & guess wot.......She started purring again so it looks like she won't be getting burnt on bonfire night after all. . thanks again for all your suggestions .

Nice one mate. While your on playing i would take the dizzy cap off and check the phase sensor wires to make sure the wires arnt cracking.

Atleast it was an easy fix.

Glad it was an easy fix The connector is actually quite a common problem where it loses it's grip on the connector pins, it may be worth doing the "Wiggle" test, to make sure you don't get caught with problems in the future.
