from what I understand about amateur photography by the time the said semi professional has pissed about with his vast collection of lenses scrolled through his many complex camera settings, the subject matter has normally died and decomposed

It is also unlikely that making adjustments to the camera settings using a stock lens will improve the picture I find that using one of the pre sets on a stock lens give the best results

so back to my original question which of the vast range of canon lenses would be best for the 600d without paying 8k for a lens it's all in the lens no the camera

Not really, tried them a few times but with the stock lens and the subject matter not really any improvements using the stock lens.
No doubt far more practice and experience is required.
If I was as expert in photography as I am in the automotive field I wouldn't be asking for expert camera advice on here.
You never see me ask any automotive advice do you

I honestly can't believe you don't use the g.a.y.e settings tea boy people seem to be over complicating things... just buy a simple disposable tony.

My understanding is that in order to improve the pictures I first need to upgrade the std lens
I already have a little understanding of the settings I also have a couple of sons one of which has it all sussed, unfortunately being my son it is very difficult to obtain much information from him
He has certainly exceeded the lens' capabilities on the 400d
the 600d was only purchased to be able to take some small video clips what I need now is a suitable general purpose lens that matches the 600d's capabilities
as time goes on I will no doubt need some fixed focal point quality lenses
But unless my ex wife refunds me my money these will have to wait
I am looking at this one CANON EFS 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM

If you want to keep the same focal lengths as you have now, then stop looking and buy it. Its exceptional by any standard and its the one that spends most of its time on my 7D.

On a serious front, maybe you could show us a couple of pictures and tell us what it is you want to improve in them.
Perhaps you need to adopt some technique or are falling foul of some common problems that afflict DSLR's.

I say that because the kit lens really is capable of some amazing photographs in the hands of a seasoned photographer.

depends what it is you're trying to 'improve', but i doubt very much lens quality is an issue if you don't go out of auto mode.

as stu says, post of some of your existing pictures and tell us what it is about them that needs improving and why you think a different lens will do anything differently and we might be able to give you some pointers. otherwise, if all you want to do is spend some money, go ahead.

as I posted earlier the upgrade from the 400d to the 600d is mainly for the video capability and the flippy out twiddly lcd screen lol
the upgrade to the lens is based on all the technical reviews I have read and I have researched and read quite a few hence why i didn't buy the 7d or 5d mk11
why you lot don't seem to be able to read is beyond me
I'll say it a gain for those who are hard of hearing :- 400d upgraded to 600d because I want the one camera do all ie photo's and video
it was 488 quid not 48 thousand ffs so hardly alot of money to waste my x wife spent more than that on shoes in a month roflol

Just get the 600d then for the video and screen.

If your really interested in getting better shots then its worth spending time understanding apertures and shutter speeds. Your lenses are good enough by the looks of it.

Once you reach the limits of your current lenses you will know exactly what lense you need next.

600d on the way i look forward to twiddling my flippy out screen
the photos I take tend to be spontaneous not preplanned
the many reviews I have read all say that the cameras capabilities far exceed the stock lens
one could say that the 400d was a waste of money in that I now need to upgrade
I should have bought a 500d or 550d not the 400d 2 years ago
low light conditions have been a problem in the past with the 400d and lenses I have, adjustments to the camera settings don't seem to improve it, research seems to point to the lenses I have
this isn't a major issue, I have solved this very cheaply by taking the pictures in daylight lol

In think it is you whom needs to learn to read old boy, nobody is disputing upgrading the body, only the lens as none of us know WHAT your trying to improve. I will try and find an example in pictures if i get chance later.

stu i was referring to those that suggest i keep the 400 d
what I ideally want is a good all round general purpose lens the problem so far is that one of these is more than the camera
What I don't want to do is buy a pair of lenses only to find i need to upgrade them later
I'd sooner buy the better lens when my x wife refunds me
one has to admit that there are a huge number of lenses and it is critical one has the correct lens for the correct subject matter
whilst I don't feel that i will ever need fixed focul length professional lens
I do feel i need a better one that the low end user stock ones
I was not suggesting that you haven't read what I have written
just a couple of users don't seem to get the reason why I have bought the 600d
your info and tips have been excellent

to be honest at my age with failing eye sight even I think I look good in the mirror so no need for super expensive lenses for me well not for the camera lol
So they say, i have a 550D and an L series lens (70-200 f/4 usm) on the end of it, the difference is huge when going against my other canon lens (55-250 f/4-5.6 is) I just wish i could have afforded the IS model.

I played with the 600D in Jessops ages ago, along with the 7D and 5DmkII needles to say im purchasing a 5d when i can but the 600d didnt seem a lot different to the 550D i have got.

a 5d mk11 looked at them but too much money for me
the 600d didn't seem a lot different than your 550 d cos it isn't lol
i only have a 400d wish i'd bought the 550d at the time
just a couple of letters on the model type certainly adds a huge amount to the price the letter L seeming to be the most expensive letter in the cannon range

Here are some ive taken.
I always seem to shoot in M mode, never the green box.
A massive tip for you is to read the manual, cover to cover, you will learn a hell of a lot in the manual and save you using auto mode again.

Its crazy some of the prices you see, the 5DMKII has just dropped in price another Ł300 so im gonna be going that way soon.
As for L series lenses, Its a nightmare once you start realising that f/2 is better than f/4 and why. The price can fairly rocket, then add in some Image Stabilisation and your looking at bank loans

Ł1598 for the body and Ł2149 for the camera and 24-105 L lens.
You save Ł200 on the body and Ł350 on the kit.

I assume that is also an L IS usm
each one of these suffix moves the decimal point to the right

I would have liked a 5D MK2 as well but when comparing them for days on end It was the continuous shooting fps and wireless transmitter that swung me to the 7D personally along with it being cheaper.

Have I shot a single scene that required 8+FPS since?
Have I fuck!

And the wireless flash system? Once!

And the wireless flash system? Once!

I do like the 7D fps i had a good shot of that, but as you say unless your doing something that requires you to need it then it hardly gets used, and is there not like a million focus points on the 7D?

Ive seen a good few apps aswell that you can control with an ipad or iphone, using your ipad as a monitor, say if your camera is upside down on a tripod and you cant see the screen you can focus and shoot from the phone or ipad.

Flowers and butterflys, what else do you need photos off?

Well if you looked hard enough you will find the glamour and nude section and there is plenty tits and minge in that, just dont use the words tits and minge, clearly everyone goes on it for a perv but you need to be pro and talk about the lighting and shit.
