Ive seen a good few apps aswell that you can control with an ipad or iphone, using your ipad as a monitor, say if your camera is upside down on a tripod and you cant see the screen you can focus and shoot from the phone or ipad.

nice pic but that style looks a bit of a health and safety issue lol
clarification of the lenses I already have please
EF 75_300mm 1:4-5.6 ultrasonic this is an old lens from my 35mm canon
EF 28mm 1:2.8
EF 35-80mm 1:4-5.6 ultrasonic
what does the S stand for in EFS
what does ultrasonic mean
I assume the 1:2.8 means f2.8
many thanks

The EF-S is the lens mount. The standard canon AF mount is known as the "EF" mount. EF-S is an extension of this. The EF-S lenses only work on cameras with a 1.6x smaller sensor than a 35mm piece of film. If you have a Canon 300D, 350D, 20D or 30D this lens will fit. If you have any other canon DSLR or SLR, it won't fit.
The IS means its image stabilised. This means sensors in the lens make an element move back and forward to counteract the effects of camera shake (aka when you do a long exposure and can't keep it still). This won't let you do very long exposures, but you can normally get 1-3 shutter speed stops slower.
The USM means Ultrasonic Motor. This is a type of AF motor that is almost silent. It is also normally quite fast at focussing

Ultrasonic is the type of autofocus I think.
Clarification - you have alot of cheap lens's. Yes 1:2.8 is F2.8
I have the 17-55 2.8is that people have mentioned and it now costs about what all your lens's cost. It is a good lens but not worth it if you only shoot in full auto as the camera will just shoot it at f2.8 all the time which isn't necessarily it's best aperture.
Lean to shoot in Av (fiex aperture, shutter speed varies) or Tv (fixed shutter speed, aperture varies) before you get a better lens if you want one.
Dexy, is that photo HDR'd?

I have made the assumption that the ultrasonic ona couple of the lens I have is the same as the current USM abbreviation on the newer lenses

S means sh*t it won't fit a full frame camera if I buy one. I'm not exactly sure what it means, but it means it won't fit EF mount cameras.

I am simlpy trying to clarify which lenses to get I have been bombarded with all sorts of advice some clearly good some bad some insulting and alot just sales patter from a spotty teenage sales person
quite a few who seem to know what they are on have suggested that i am wasting my time with these lenses on a 600d
which is actually the reason for my original post
stu has made a couple of suggestions of which are on the top of my list
I have hardly ever used the 75 -300
i currently use the efs 18 55 but feel something like this
EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS Lens may be ok for my purpose

the 18-200 is a heavy old beast and can be a bit slow to af
i had it and sold it on fine in good light and walking about on holidays and days out etc but heavy
most people upgrade to a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as a replacement for the kit lens but faster
i went for a 15-85 at about 400-00 used for an all round lens and was quite pleased with it but it is not perfect
stu has the right lens in the 17-55 f2.8 it is simply the best but at a price

It's a quality lens, but like I said above, to get the best out of that lens you really need to learn how to use Av and Tv modes at least.
If you use it in fully auto, the camera tends to shoot everything at f2.8, which sometimes can be a bad thing if the depth of field it gives you is too narrow and half your photo is out of focus. It's sharpest at F8 I think. So if you stick it in Av mode at F8 and just keep an eye that the shutter speed doesn't go too low you should get some good shots. Just play around with it alot until you get used to what's what.

I will be bashing av mode and tv mode when the lens lands and if the camera ever lands
just been reading their negative feed back should have read the neg first
instead of the hundreds of +ve s
appears they have been known to take at least a week to dispatch a stock item and that the box is not sealed and possibly not new as advertised
those are some of the complaints ooops
refunds don't seem to be a complaint though they seem to refund unhappy customers

I might be selling my D300s if you fancy a nice change to the better/dark side
I simply dont use it, its great but too bulky to carry anywhere and you stick out like a sore thumb.
I have "downgraded" to a Nikon S8000

All DSLR should be good. BUT you'll still find you can take bad pictures as it's a world of difference to a point and shoot camera. If you stick in green box mode (fully auto) to start with you should be OK, but try and learn to use the manual modes (M/Av/Tv) too for better pictures, especially when/if you upgrade your lens.
The good thing with any digital camera is you can shoot as many pictures as you want while experimenting and just delete the crap

ffs dexy I just bought the efs 55- 250is of ebay last night
I was bored of looking and trying to find the efs 17-55 is usm f2.8 at sensible money
have some bids on a couple so I bought the 55 - 250 whilst I was waiting
looked at the 70 300 L a few times but can't see that I need one of those just yet
not exactly a walk around lens
Doing my head in reading the test reviews on all the lenses canon make
the efs 17-55 is usm f 2.8 seems to be the one to have but it's a pricey fooker for a non L lens
not many for sale used and they fetch 550 + currently 800 quid new from jessops
you haven't got one of them have you
My cheap new ebay camera still hasn't turned up they have refunded a token £10 to my pay pal for the delay but still not showing as despatched
uk company uk phone number, stock is held at DPP so they say sounds most odd to me
is this some sort of way of them getting round import duty and vat

Nice pic Stu
Camera ordered not a fancy one with loads of lenses but a nice simple one for my hols in a few weeks. A Fujifilm Finepix JZ300... this thing is small, has 10 x zoom and is 12MP I think.. all for £60
HD video recording too Tony
When it arrives I'll whack some pics up to compare

hd video typically requires class 10
your camera should come with a card surely
cards can cost you more that twice what you paid for the camera roflol
they know how to make money these camera manufacturers
it's like buying a new car and 1st on the options list is the engine lol
