Default Most extreme NA CVHs?

Random one this, was just thinking about it, god knows why

Considering how many sporting Ford models got this engine, you don't see too many tuned examples, what with the popularity of RS Turbo or Zetec swaps. Obviously that's a cheap and easy way to get a good power increase over the normal XR engines, but it got me thinking, how far has anyone ever taken a naturally aspirated CVH engine?

Seems to be plenty of parts for them, wild cams, carbs, throttle bodies, pistons, rods, the works. Does anyone know someone who's built a proper powerful aspirated one of any kind? 1600 or bigger perhaps?

The RS1600i saw some competition use back in the day, what were the engines like in those?

Random I know, but just curious really

there are some 200bhp ones but thats stupidly expensive....

you can get a 150bhp lump built by someone like vulcan for £1895 and thats taken out to 1900cc. but you will need twin 40s and decent manifold ect

there was a mk4 xr3i which had quite an engine in it, it was featured in performance ford, proper high lift cam, throttle bodies omex managment (I think), that was probably thewildest n/a cvh I've ever seen. Some people on here may know the car I'm talking about, it was white, the rear spoiler had been removed, clear lights on the rear, running really low, stripped interior etc, and the engine parts were anodised in red. Anyone remember it?

170 is achieveable without totally breaking the bank but most folk on here are used to turbo's so will complain that any n\a tuning is too expensive

Some people have said throttle bodies are better than carbs, I don't know this though, I'd say for 170bhp you would need a fairly lairy cam, a well ported head, possibly with bigger valves, probably get the bottom end lightened and balanced for reliability.

What sort of spec would that require then?

Although there are better value options out there, I'm surprised there hasn't been at least a few more tuned CVHs over the years really.

Youre kinda looking in the wrong place, not many tuned n\a ones cause the turbo cvh has always been cheap and plentiful in supply

However in the kit car scene plenty of 7 type cars used to have cvh's in the old days and there wasnt room for the turbo. So thats where to look for the knowledge, not on here

I started building a manifold for bike carbs which tbh is good to go. As much as i love the engine i could never justify paying out for proper bodies (wouldnt want to do it half arsed) and management.
I was about to type that mappable ignition will be my last mod. But both you and i know it wont be,lol. You'll have to bttt this when i go and fit tb's in a few yrs or something

Oh I will

I reckon that maybe bike bodies should be the next step after your current fiddlings. Be nice to see what it could do!

I will have to dig out a photo of a 1.6 cvh in a XR2 that Andrew Lindley aka freak power built on a rolling road, Loads of custom made parts, monster engine spec and mental exhaust manifold !! made 218 bhp at the flywheel.

It revved its nuts off and i loved it
