Lean mixtures and/or detonation cause both the plug and piston to melt. The plug sure as hell didnt do the damage.

Why cant people tell the truth when it comes to these things ?
There is no way in hell the engine will melt anything all of a sudden sitting at a lazy 70mph cruise.
Now if you happened to be boosting the shit out of it before hand, then yes it is quite possible.
But why not give an accurate account of the circumstances leading up to it ?
A bit like a wanker that brought a Subaru in I helped tune. Not running properly, and said it just happened when driving normally. An underbucket shim had dislodged and he was very lucky not to have dropped a valve.
The only way that would ever happen, is if he was abusing the shit out out of it. But of course he denied everything.
His mate was a bit more honest though.
Either way it sounds fucked.

My engine melted piston 4 on the way home from Ford Fair too. EFi cvh. And we were actually sat at 75 and it just cut out. No compression on 1 & 4, and i've seen a hole in piston 4 with a bore scope, although 1 looked ok.
I've since learned that the ECU leans off at cruise above a certain speed, it had been setup last year when a couple injectors packed up, i fitted a new speed sensor day before ford fair as the old one was properly knackered.
This must have meant it could lean off much more when it saw the real speed. Ran absolutely fine for the 9 or so hours before it broke.

I was thinking the same....
Let me guess... was it going REALLY well just before it blew?

Hope it gets sorted as cheap as possible. Such a pain in the ass.

Someone I know took a engine back to A1 Rallysport that had melted, apparently that let go driving to the shops, later turned out he had been 4 up doing top speed runs up and down the A1
![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
Said damage

Not sure what A1's opinion was but that comment sure helped him out with the rebuild costs
