Default cosworth engine gone big time? your thoughts

hi guys, was on motorway on sunday in my 2wd saff cosworth doing between 75-80 when all of a sudden me car started to run on 3 and alot of smoke, pulled over popped bonnet oil evrywhere which looked like came up from dipstick, checked header tank all water gone. when finally got recovered home tryied to turn engine over wouldnt have none of it by hand took leads off plugs out and turned it over quickly and oil shoots up out of cylinder four, any ideas what could of caused this, recently had oil change new filter and i never travel anywhere without checking oil and water etc, has head gasket gone or something more serious like rings or piston? thanks guys

put a bore scope down the plug holes and have a look at the tops of the pistons - one of them could be holed by a valve.

Sounds a bit sick..... head off time.

However I think Tony has got it in one. Just shows how good he is to give a full technical diagnosis over the internet from just the one post

Send it! engine in terms SHAT its self..

You need to remove the head, any cunt with a ratchet can do that so off you go and come back when you are done..

and its all piston related.. if its pressured you could also be looking at a head skim.

You will need a Head Gasket and some Balts, so while your there go get the head pressured tested and checked.. you don't wanna be putting that back on and finding out its blown the head gasket too, you'll need to then do it all over a again.

Chop chop.. haha

diplomatic

imply ability to avoid offending others or hurting their feelings, especially in situations where this ability is important. Diplomatic suggests a smoothness and skill in handling others, usually in such a way as to attain one's own ends and yet avoid any unpleasantness or opposition: By diplomatic conduct he avoided antagonizing anyone. Politic emphasizes expediency or prudence in looking out for one's own interests, thus knowing how to treat people of different types and on different occasions: a truth which it is not politic to insist on. Tactful suggests a nice touch in the handling of delicate matters or situations, and, unlike the other two, often suggests a sincere desire not to hurt the feelings of others: a tactful way of correcting someone.

Pity! What caused it? Maybe shit oil? Never heard about this problem? But that doesn't mean anything. Standard engine (tuning faults are common)? Anyway good luck sorting it all out.

i would suggest maybe, plug end burnt and fell onto piston melting a hole through.

Happened on my cossie, but didn't melt through on No1 cylinder, rebuild though :-(

Why cant people tell the truth when it comes to these things ?

There is no way in hell the engine will melt anything all of a sudden sitting at a lazy 70mph cruise.

Now if you happened to be boosting the shit out of it before hand, then yes it is quite possible.

But why not give an accurate account of the circumstances leading up to it ?

A bit like a wanker that brought a Subaru in I helped tune. Not running properly, and said it just happened when driving normally. An underbucket shim had dislodged and he was very lucky not to have dropped a valve.
The only way that would ever happen, is if he was abusing the shit out out of it. But of course he denied everything.
His mate was a bit more honest though.

Either way it sounds fucked.

Id say if thats the truth and it was at 70-80 then id say it was a valve seat thats dropped as it deffo wont melt itself at that speed..
