i personally would start with the arm and work from there tbh, sounds like the lever isnt moving the clutch enough and your clutch is dragging rather that disengaging

as it has had an engine change could it be that the person that changed it put the cable on for the old engine instead of the new or would that not make a difference. it was a 1.6 si is now a 1.8 zetec ???

I'd start by changing the gearbox oil, or at the very least ensuring it is topped up as it should be.
If it was cable or bearing it would be the same all the time, it sounds as though either there isn't enough box oil or it's not a good grade, see it all the time, normally a lot of ford boxes use ATF, which can give a nice change in some, but on others gear oil works better even if meant to be atf.
Don't bank on the correct grade as listed by ford being any good, I put the correct castrol tqd in my cossie box, which was brand new, it was bloody awful, despite being the precise oil ford quoted, I put in the latest ATF, dexron 6, so much better, I couldn't even get 2nd gear before changing down on a brand new box!!
