hello mate personally i would take plugs out first make sure it turns with a ratchet or spanner on the crank pulley do about 4 revoulutions, so you no it aint seized (unlikely but just precaution) then drain the old oil out chuck some fresh oil in it and new filter! is it out of another car (engine) or has the car not been started for three years?? in which case if its the car fresh fuel too!!! that should be fine mate good luck!

disconnect the coil & fuel pump drain oil fill with fresh oil turn it over until you got oil pressure then connect up again new fuel in tank new fuel filter start it up should be fine warm engine up before you rev the nuts off it .
beat me to it i type to slow lol

its the bottom pulley on the engine i think its a 19mm bolt (not 100% on bolthead size) but it will be around 19mm! hope it helps, oh and totally agree andy dont rev it up until warm and only then dont go over half throttle, and take in to consideration the water make sure its bled otherwise you will cook the engine.. looking into the engine bay you will have the top of the engine there the two camshaft pulleys at the top (if the cover is off) and if you look right at the bottom of the engine you will see the round pulley at bottom of the engine im guessing with alternator belt on, there is a bolt that goes through the centre of that pulley turnclockwise all the way round!

No, it's a pig to get a ratchet and socket on due to fan shroud in the way..
Personally i would NOT drain the oil until it has warmed up, then do oil and filter change, start with fresh fuel/new filter, allow it to run for about 1 minute then leave a few minutes, to let some heat soak through, engines left for long periods can nip the piston if heated too quickly, had it on bikes, assume it happens to cars as well ?
This is what I do anyway pull king lead to get oil pressure up with plugs out first, easier on the starter that way, if pressure won't build with plugs out then has to be started, will build within 2-5 secs, and put oil light out.
Expect it to clatter like a old tractor(or my old cossie!!) to start with.
Just keep a good eye on leaking pipes etc, have a fire extinguisher handy!!

I would drain the oil and look through the sump plug with a bore scope to check if any rust is there,
I have had a car in that had a engine sitting around for a few years and was run it had rust all on the inside and it then turned the oil in to grinding paste dont need to say what happend to it.

definately drop oil out before starting it. the oil degrades over time. working on boat engines as they usually sit for long periods of time and some times layed up for years at a time the oil turns to an acid and sits and rots bearings and crank. Like mark said get a bore scope in there and check for rust.

only me (most people may say different) But I would get some cheaper oil, drain old, put that straight in with new filter, then drain that after 20mins tick over then put the same cheaper stuff in, 20mins drain again then do filter again and put your decent oil in. Oil is cheaper than metal at the end of the day

if Its been that long you can bet it has no oil in it apart from the sump! no oil = engine death. so I would emply oil and remove oil filter.
Measure out required amount of oil for you engine pour some into oil filter, heat the rest to about 90C then fill engine, start engine with out the ht leads attached for about 30 sec then attach leads, and off you go... this will get good warm oil where its needed before the engine fires up so you get good lubrication from the start.
good luck
and replace oil filter with a new one LOADED with new oil. then fill the engine with

no do not attach ht leads when engine is turning over! this will do more than tingle! as regards to oil something decent! you pick, my first choice is redline as it is Polyol Ester based so won't crack in the turbo.
also wait for the engine to warm up before putting it under load and chech the coolant levels too!

I really dont think you should be allowed any where near an engine mate .

Ok here is what you do!
tell you partner its time she had as night out!
Wait till she has gone out.
Use the large non stick saucepan in the kitchen to heat the second part of the oil.
Measure the temp using the thermometer used for checking the temp in a roast joint to get it to 90C.
use a funnel to get it in the top of the engine so you do not spill any at all!
(hot oil can burn like nothing else you can imagine so be very careful. handle with extreme care) (also do not get the oil over 100c as this can get dangerous too!)
carefully clean the saucepan once it has cooled using acetone / nail varnish remover and face cleansing cotton wool pads to remove ALL traces of oil.
Deny any knowledge of using the above to your partner!
"Honest I've never used kitchen utensels for my car darling" - you can quote me on that!

why would you start a cold engine with warm oil???
when oil is cold, its viscosity is higher (as you know, not insulting your inteligence)
when the engine is cold, some of the running clearences are much higher, such as piston to bore clearence etc etc, hence you get piston slap when cold on some engines
when the oil is cold it protects these parts better until they warm up and achive the correct clerances.
putting warm oil into a cold engine would be like using to thin an oil in an engine that wanted 20W normally.
