PMSL, Nearly, had a 530d Sport as my first E39 and I loved it, love the big V8 more though
Manual gearbox conversion coming very soon and 4.6 Alpina/X5 Sport lump when I can find an engine at reasonable money

How much of a ballache is it to do the manual conversion?? I can't imagine it's a straight forward job in an E39.
What sort of gains can you get from the bigger engine, it's not massively larger in capacity is it? Or are you going to build it up on a stand before fitting?
Cheers,
Grant

i'm seriously tempted to chop the E36 M3 in for a 530D
thing i'm worried about is the potential repair bills if it all goes wrong, theyre all on 100k+ miles now and i hear that fixing them if they do break aint cheap
kinda defeats the object of having a cheaper to run car if its no cheaper than the E36 M3 to run! that being said the M3 has been costing me about 1k a month in repair bills since i bought it seriously most unreliable and unlucky car i have ever owned, and thats saying something! lol

20K+ Super Poster.
one of the most expensive costs has been the bloody WINDOWS!
every window has needed a new regulator and rubber. each time it's cost me about 150quid so that's 150 x EIGHT! (parts n labour)
honestly, almost a GRAND getting the electric windows working FFS

Grant, Mechanically, piece of cake - Swap pedal box, add hydraulics for clutch (slave, pipe work and master cylinder), swap the flywhel for the manual DMF and clutch, gearbox, swap the propshaft and then wire in teh clutch switch to the DME and reversing light switch to the DME too.
The difficult part is coding out the autobox from the DME, IKE, EWS and LCM - This can be done using BMW NCS Expert which is what dealerships used to use for programming modules untill a couple of years ago - I have a friend who is VERY knowledgeable about this and is working with the downloads from the car as we speak to alter the HEX code in the ECU's to remove the autobox to stop it throwing a "trans fail safe" code on the OBD
Then I have the software and hardware to recode the LCM to turn off the check errors that will occur from the reversing lights and brake lights (as the EGS isn't present anymore it will think the reversing and brake lights arn't working due to coding) even though they work fine, so that sorts that one out
Simples
As for the engine - Simply put, the 4.4 V8 puts out 286bhp and the 4.6 V8 puts out 347bhp - The 4.6 engine from the X5 4.6is is an Alpina unit which was fitted to the E39 B10 and uses the same core block design but with a few changes internally, but uses the same mechanics as the 4.4 and the same DME and fuel supply/inlet system - even the fuel injectors are identical with the only inlet tract change was the 4.6 engine using the earlier M62 non vanos inlet manifold as it has a better flow rate for air in the mid to top range of the revs and will therefore give a nice increase in torque too. - Straight swap and remap the DME to suit - uses all the same sensors and wiring etc etc - A very very nice conversion and one that is totally factory looking for that OEM feel once again Plus the 4.6 lump revs to 7200rpm as opposed to 5900 for the 4.4

I see, I see... I thought there could be issues with the DME, IKE, EWS and LCM.
The 4.6 sounds like a bloody brilliant upgrade, certainly more than you'd expect looking at the heading 200cc capacity increase anyway... the higher rev limit should be handy, specially with the manual conversion too.
Cheers,
Grant

and I thought Fords were unreliable and a money pit!
I've had mine, what 6 weeks, and I've lunched the box! I know its a common weakness on this car but mine should have been good for plenty more miles yet! No warning, Transmission Failsafe Programme come on, on my way to work one day and by the time I limped it home that night it was FUBAR'd! 2k lighter and it will be uprated with a Corvette Pump and stronger oilways & valves.
Lets hope thats the end of my problems with the car....
