how much value does cat d take off a car ? because a guy wants 4.5k for an rst but ive just hpi'd it and its cat d

all input would be appreciated

does seem expensive for an rst but that depends on spec... is it good spec and mint surely 4.5k would buy one without a cat d history of here

£4.5k for a CAT-D? For that sort of money I would be wanting a clean straight car without that sort of history.

Not worth that sort of money on a cat D when there is loads of good straight Rs turbos out there going for that sort of money.

cat d could mean it had the windows smashd or lock damage not necessarily twated on a car that old?. But yer thats right.

The fact that it is registered as a cat d will put a lot of people off me included especially when you want to sell it on even if it had minor damage.

what you have to remember is if you ever have to claim on the vehicle,they wont pay you out no where near that value ,as its allready been payed out once,so make sure you get it for a good price normally a 3rd or a bit more off the market value depending on condition

Just be careful with cat d and c as they can Void your insurance, it's in the small print.
It's seem like another excuse for the insures not to pay,they've just started writing it in the terms.
So worth a check

More than likely just another myth. the truth is more like previous history will reflect any payout should a claim be made, which is entirely different.
My astra is insured with the same company for the last 6 years, in which time it has been "written off" 3 times, cat d and been paid out on each claim the std market value, for example, so insuring it/them is not a problem, the last assessor to look at it who wrote it off, needed me to point out the damage, it was that bad, sorry my bad, it's now 4 times, I forgot last december when it was written off by some dozy old bint who couldn't see a white car in broad daylight in front of her, she hit the wing and broke the indicator, dented wing, it's only a old l reg astra, repairs not worthwhile.
A time before that it was written off due to a hit on the rear 1/4 that made a dent about 3-4mm deep and about 1" round and scuffed the bumper, body shop quoted for a new rear 1/4 and bumper, it was the insurers nominated repairer, I forgot all about the damage as it's so slight, but was paid £600 odd for the car damage, with the condition I keep the salvage.
The insures are fully aware of this, as they had update all the time, the nominated repairers were Gladwins, who frankly I wouldn't let loose with a colouring book, let alone a car!!

a lot of insurers wont cover previously written off cars. I know this as i used to own one.

As said above cat d could be down to a simple smashed window or scratch.
To some who dont understand it could de value the car alot but if you understand cat d,c,b etc its worth as much as you want to pay???
As it was only cat d in 2006 i would say it was very light damage.

Some insurerance company's will insure them,my last few cars have been cat c, I've recently insured another car and the small said they won't insure cat c/d. Some will ask for an engineers reports to insure them,just worth checking,I've only come across this in the last 4months

some will cover, some wont so check before. IMO a cat D knocks about 25% of the value off the car against the same car unrecorded.

Some say 'it dont make no difference' but you try selling one for the price of a non recorded car - no chance!

You need to see a specialist if you are thinking of paying £4.5k for a cat D RST.

But you should probably go and see the same specialist if you are still thinking of paying £4.5k for a non cat D RST.

In general 25% less for cat D.

Most RST are piles of utter crap these days so cat D or not its never going to be worth that sort of money.

cat d is only worth half the price 4.5k for a rst id stay well clear and buy a clean unrecorded car ,my rst was a cat d and was worth fook all when i tryed sell it so broke it for parts as no one who no's fords will by a damaged one

why are people so bothereed bouts cat d? It means mlnor cosmetic damage and there are plenty of rst's out there thats had more substancial repairs for more money, if its a good clean car it wouldnt bother me

cause for 4.5 k you'd want a low milage mint car thats had no repaires ,cat d's are worth half the money regardless of spec

its a lot of money for an rs turbo in the first place.
being an rs turbo over 20 years old its probably had more panels/paint/repairs than any cat d write off car would ever need anyway!

regardless though,the stigma of cat d/c will always affect a cars value,so i would say it would be worth a third less than a similar condition/spec car.

i would look around for what else is on offer for that sort of money.

Normally i would agree that it knocks 25%ish of the value. But in the case of a car like this i wouldn't be so worried, especially when there are non recorded cars out there that have probably had more work anyway.

The "worth" is not answerable in my opinion, as it varies from person to, person, what someone is willing to pay for the same car.
For example I disregard ALL history and buy on what I see, my cossie had genuine wings, ie about 18 years old, so that was worth LESS in my opinion, ford rustproofing is not the best in the world, I would be happier paying more for a car that's had new wings fitted properly, my view is that there would be rust lurking so would need new wings before long, if the car had had new wings boot/bonnet/doors etc I would like it more, assuming all done well.
I have bought mostly cat d for the very reason you get more car for your money, you can get some serious bargains because of peoples perception about value, but I ONLY ever buy cars I don't ever sell, so each car is used until no longer economically vaiable for me.
