ive had a cossie make a similar noise, was nicks from msd, turned out crank pully was tight as but had nipped the washer thingie enough and that made a right noise like tappets from the top end but it clearly wasnt!!!

Get yourself over to the rsoc and contact carl/Saff he is the man to ask and he lives in islington.. He's a top lad and no doubt would help a fellow Rs member

Thanks for all the replys i've only just got a chance to get on the net (Ibiza sun)

Head thickness is some thing that people will all ways disagree on i ran my last head which was 137.5mm ish with no problems be it I used a thicker head gasket than the one currantly on the car.

I can't see valve contact causing the problem as the pistons have deep valve cut outs

My old man has stripped the cam cover off to have a look and found some scores on the cam lobes we are both thinking may be sticky tappits????

But don't know how this makes sense but will be checking this out:

I remember tightening the crank pulley bolt to 110ft lbs then realising it should only be 100ft lbs but left it as is.

Correct, but he would certainly have bent valves if this were the case, as at the V the timing would be 16 degrees out from memory.

As said it sounds like tappets or the tentioner to me.
