no they dont make a noise,
could be tappets or make sure the pulleys on cams are tight. i've had them come slack before causing a tapping noise

Don't think it's tappets going to check pullys and maybe lift cam cover as the head didn't have nylocs on the cam caps even though I used lock tight think it would be worth a check!

Is the head the same thickness as your old one ?

Might be valve piston contact

Here's the vid for what it's worth don't think you can hear it quite well, at least not through an iPhone or laptop speakers sounded fine on full range speaker though. By the way it is deffo not tappets more like cam belt tensioner or water pump but with the trusty long screwdriver on ear doesn't really sound like either,
Injectors are noisy just put that down to 83lbers?

If the cambelt is overtight it will make this noise, i have had this, slackened it off and all was good.

Cars been running a few days not for very long periods

Cams are bd14 inlet standard exhaust

And cam belt is a worry for me as the reason for new head is cam belt tensioner failed!
Fitted it wit a nice 90deg twist but after running it feels tighter!
Then if you put it in gear with engine off rock car back and forward the cam belt loosens back to how I had first installed it?

Everything in the head is brand new cams, tappets, bearings and seals

Cam belt being to tight normaly makes a noise when the engine starts to come on load.. Sounds like ur timings out to me.. Mine sounded the same and it was a vernier pulley that came loose

It doesn't make the noise straight away after starting but after about 10 or 20 seconds

That's the only thing left to change it's got cheaper 10/40 in it at the moment where as I normally use millers 15/60
Do you think this could cause a problem?

just when you say at first crank its fine and 20 seconds in it starts to make noise so i would change oil , sounds like the oil is thinning and letting tappets tap lol

^maybe but doesn't sound like tappets to me more of a deeper noise almost like water pump but this is 200miles old and with screwdriver to ear doesn't sound noisy!
Well I'm flying out to Ibiza tomorrow so will leave it with my dad to change oil and see if it makes a difference he just wanted to get some use from it while I was away! LOL

This will be checked before it's used any more because as I have said the nuts were not nyloc so I used plenty of lock tight but need to check to be certain they were torques to 21nm and fronts to 9nm

They are Kent cams and I used original yb cams lined up against them to do timing (if you know what I mean) inlet could be a few degs out but can't see it making that noise, bearings are brand new Cosworth
And I'd stake money on it not being tappets
Really need to swap oil and think I'm going to stick a new tensioner on even though this one is brand new as could be faulty

It isn't the tensioner, it is the tappets, I have known them take a few miles of USING the car till they got silent, though it sounds like one or two might not be getting a good oil supply, this can cause them to droop.
As it is a new head I assume you removed the caps on the ends and cleaned out the oil galleries each side of the head to ensure they were spotless ?, the oil debris and crap tends to collect worse at the rear on the exhaust side as this is hottest, have seen these heads virtually plugged up with carbonised/congealed oil here.
The belt WILL go loose when turning opposite way, in use if you could slow it down enough you would see the belt slacken and tighten between the cam pulleys on each turn as lobes flip over on the cams(due to pressure from the springs), this is very normal, the inlet is playing follow the leader all the time.
You should also have made sure the oil supply holes in the bore where each tappet goes was clear, using a drill or similar.

Thanks tab but I have to categorically say it is not the tappets, I know full well what they sound like, I had the head inspected by my machinist Inc pressure test and full wash out/clean.
Think I'm being over cautious with it now as in the past few months have had and exhaust cam fail= 12 bent valves and then a tensioner fail= 8 bent valves!
The noise is deeper than tappets and as I've said sounds more like water pump.

The only thing in the back of my mind is the toothed crank pulley as it's an anodised version and there was a bit of play on that but the noise seems to be higher than this but could be traveling?

Using a screwdriver as a stethoscope the noisiest thing in the area the noise seems to come from is the tensioner I have ordered a new one to try and eliminate that at least.

If any one is in the north London area and fancies a look I would really appreciate it as I don't think I could handle another major!

Thanks for all the input by the way

So like said above have u removed the water pump belts and ran the engine. This will eliminate the water pump cause the engine will be running but the water pump wont. Silly question have you tensioned the tensioner the right way.

Remember the cossie times up to the lug on the bottom pully NOT the V.
