Default MY99 WRX...not making factory boost?

One of my friends recently purchased a poorly WRX Classic, had afew niggling problems to start with but now he's experiencing a lack of boost.

Google thinks that these run approx 13psi on the stock TD04, his boost gauge is reading 6psi.

Aside from checking for boost leaks (hoses, vacuum pipes and i'cooler) is there anything else that could be at fault or worth checking?

Occasionally it throws up the EM light, he wants to manually increase boost but i've advised against it after hearing about these chocolate engines lol

Anyone know of any suspect parts that could cause this problem?

MY99 Classic WRX
Prodrive Exhaust
K&N cone
Dumpvalve etc etc

The em light could be an overboost situation and really needs a code read to find out.

Beware of aftermarket gauges as they can be very innacurate especially if its an old one.

My advice, dont guess..take it to someone who is experienced as an engine rebuild is not cheap !!

I just told matey to go get it plugged into a diagnostic machine, turns out the knock sensor is mullered and the tech said that its a common problem with the older Impreza's...it retards the ignition and lowers boost levels allegedly.

Ł35 for the diagnostics, Ł80 for a dealer sensor or Ł36 for a eBay jobbie...not the end of the world really!

Thanks for your quick replies

Advise him to take the K&N cone filter off asap and replace with standard airbox and a green panel filter instead... the MY99/00 MAF sensors are really sensitive and they don't react well to pre-oiled cone filters. If your MAF goes wrong, then there is even more chance that the bottom end will go melty melty.

Cheers,
Grant

Have you recently seviced it? Because If you put too much oil in it, they can get oil in the boost pressure solenoid.
