I just told matey to go get it plugged into a diagnostic machine, turns out the knock sensor is mullered and the tech said that its a common problem with the older Impreza's...it retards the ignition and lowers boost levels allegedly.

£35 for the diagnostics, £80 for a dealer sensor or £36 for a eBay jobbie...not the end of the world really!
