there are LOADS of kit car companies!!

have you even looked at the kit car mags?

do you know what type of kit your after? lotus 7 rep, cobra, etc, etc.

do you know what donor vehicle you will need? sierra, jag, metro, etc.

i suggest you start reading into it all first and visit at the very least 1 kit car show and speak to owners and the companies first to decide what you want otherwise you WILL make a very big mistake costing you thousands!

westfield and tiger are two top ones off the top of my head. pluss i think you can buy caterham 7's in kit form but cost a fair chunk.

do NOT (if they are still trading) buy a robin hood kit. we got a robin hood 2b kit as an impulse buy off my dad's mate. he'd got it to build for a customer and hadn't taken a deposit and they then pulled out so we got it on impulse. the WORST kit car you will ever come accross! we got rid in the end and took a loss of Ł1500!!!!

some tigers are designed to take twin bike engines too so are stupidly fast!

all about what you want the car for. can fit most engines upto small block v8's!

MNR vortex is one of the best starter kits I found when I was looking to buy one. Looked into the tiger avon but fould it to have quiality issues, although the higher end tiger models did seem very good, just the entry level was a bit poor, that was based on ford sierra/cortina.

The mnr is based on a mx5 which made it pretty advanced in kit car terms.

I want a mnr with a zetec turbo once funds permit

a good friend of mine bought a westfield back in 2007 in kit form. cost him Ł12k but that came with EVERYTHING it needed and all new parts so it could be registered on a 2007 number plate

i helped him with quite alot of it, and although the instructions arent clear in places its a very well made kit that still looks good now.

dont take on someone elses unfinished kit car.....waste of time

if budget is limited then i'd suggest the MX-5 based westfield kit, looks very nice and i think it comes in at around Ł7.5K with a donor car

some of the locost and robin hood kits are pretty poor to be honest when you see them in the flesh....i was impressed with the quality of the westfield kits though

I'd highly recommend a car from Mac#1 Motorsports, they're based in Sheffield if you fancy a look through at their workshop, cars and a chat with the owners, Mark and Colin.

I'm currently building a Mac#1 Worx (zx10r turbo), see my build thread below for photos and description of the full build start to nearly finished stage it currently sits in

https://passionford.com/forum/restor...3-04-11-a.html

drop me a pm if you like what you see, as a mate of mine is selling a Mac#1 Type ZR kit which he has started to build but not finished, the Type ZR is car engine based kit from Mac#1, his chassis is designed to accept a ford Zetec engine and type 9 gearbox.

Also worth having a little browse through a fairly good kit car forum www.locostbuilders.co.uk

Just remembered I have an old copy of the Type ZR brochure saved in my photobucket account

Prices and specs may be a bit out of date now, but once you have the basic kit you can buy as much or as little from Mac#1 as you want to.

thanks for that red, thats just what I need when I have my fiesta plonked on the drive in need of finishing!!!!

Brochure seems good and your build is probably the best advertisment for a PROPER kit car they have!!! Lovel it.

Have you ever come across the mnr? the price is a tad cheaper that the mac but ive not seen the quialityt of either in the flesh, only on what people have said on forums. Im loving the look of the mac, that would be ideal with a turbo'd zetec. Something I have always wanted

Cheers for the kind words Raj

If you like yellow and need to be tempted a little more, my mates kit would swallow up that zetec turbo you dream of http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/foru...php?tid=154460

I've heard some very good things of the MNR cars but have no personal experience of them, hopefully once my Mac is on the road I'll get about a bit and get some experience of the other marques available!

nice kit that red but it a bit too far down the production line for me, ideally I would want a rfesh kit as I think this would be the best way to promote our company as we could do the whole body out of composite, plus I always wanted to make the front cycle wings and rear arches wider to accept wider wheels, something which you dont see very ofter. It would also show off the powder coating, zinc coating, cnc brackets etc, would be a better advert as I think it could really apeal to kitcar enthusiasts as opposed to everyday car enthusiasts.

Will be giving mac a ring later on today and also mnr just have a chat about options etc.

Sorry for the hijack mr tucker but if it is any use I can post back up on here what both companies say for yours and any one esle's info?

Cheers fudgey, but if this ever comes off the engine will be a fresh build by Garric44 as they are local plus ive driven cars powered by their engines, that sold it for me

GET ANOTHER SHELL!!!

decide on a budget, decide on what you want from it, i.e. track day thrasher with no road use is cheapest way of building one, basic road use or a fully kitted out show standard car as the cost will vary massivly. once you've decided on that get along to a show or 2 and have a look around a few companies and have a sit in some cars as the size also varies a lot between kits.

dealing with a company you can drive to would be a bonus as with a lot of kit companies response time on phone calls, emails etc is pretty slow and it can be a real ball ache if you're waiting for 1 part holding up your build.

i personally have a MK INDY, it's a fairly old kit now, chassis was built in 2003 but the quality is good, the panels are a decent finish, i had good dealings with the guys at MK and it didn't cost the earth to build.
if i was to do it again now i'd probably go for a MNR as they seem to have some nice, well thought out cars and a good reputation.

Raj, if you ring Mac#1 later today, tell them you heard about it on passionford, they're well aware of this site due to keeping up to date with my build thread, also make sure you have at least 30 minutes spare because both Mark and Colin like to have a good natter with the customers.

Worth looking at the new Road Runner Racing SR2 - very compact, well designed chassis, uses MX5 donor.

Probably, the closest kit provider, to you is Metisse cars located in Bridgend.
They manufacture a 2 door coupe and p/u truck based on Sierra mechanicals.

Had a long chat with Chris @ mnr and he was extremely helpful. Not sure if he remembered me from a few years back but I was more than impressed with the info he gave me about their vortx cars.

Im pricing up the kit for the vortx rt with inboard suspension, much lighter chassis than most of the competition and the kit im looking at will be powered by a r1 engine, the finished build would have an official reg plate as well instead of a 'Q' as Chris said he is no way a fan of mnr's with this reg. Ive got the spread sheet he emailed over to me so im just pricing it up, there is a lot of stuff which I can get made myself so hopefully I can get the price down a bit.

Andy tucker - here is the car im on about, if you want the pricing spread sheet let me know and I will email it over to you.
