Pug 1.9td.

They put them in lots of 4x4s so must be easy enough to get a suitable gearbox adaptor.

To make them run the just need a + 12 to the stop solenoid!

Define suitable ?

Are you looking for a basic mechanical diesel with no wiring, or are you happy to dive into a nightmare of wiring ?

For the basic version....and whilst I'm not a big fan. The D24TIC 2.4 diesel VAG 6 cylinder is decent enough.
Typical rwd layout, rear sump ( in a Volvo 940 anyway ), and around 120bhp or so.

I think there is also a 5cyl version fitted to some early Audi 100's that is mostly mechanical.

After that they started to go technical with electronic control.

For a modern one with lots of wires.

There really is a multitude of engines. Dont forget to consider vans too, as some of them will be rwd. eg Merc sprinters and some VW.

From the Ford range you have the proven 1.8 (1753cc) this has been going years, from the Escort vans and then the Focus, they are fairly simple as well, but this is a F/F so may not be straightforward to fit!

You also have the 2.4D from the old Transits which are F/R.

If you are looking at newer TDDI units, then you will have a mega job with all the electronics/wiring etc.

Also why has it got to be modern?

Look at Peugeot engines I think. 1.9TD with a bosch pump will run on cooking oil and mine with 22psi of boost and raised fueling was touching 130bhp.
You goto take into account that that engine is totally mechanical, you wouldn't have to touch an ecu!
All it needs to run is a fuel flow, return and a live to the fuel pump!

That's with the six pot diesel lump in it, and presumably the BMW manual box and a hefty diff etc, so not too bad really.

He was replying to my comment about being a pain to wire in, so he was saying a complete donor car to take loom and ecu etc from, but I suspect it's all canbus at that age and linkedto lots of other items, it won't be easy like doing a yb conversion is.

Don't forget that the 1.8 came in the sierra/p100 too

avoid transit 2.4's like the plague. i don't think there has been a day over the last 3/4 years when we haven't had one in the workshop for repair. the same can also be said for the L200 (4D56) and the navara (yd25/d40) engines.
