Default Mates rates

Wonder if I'm being a bit harsh here.

Asked a couple of blokes I know to do some work on my S1 - wanted the belt changed (I'd supply), CV boot done and brakes bled (they'd get the boot and fluid). Quoted £250.

I think that's a bit steep for a basic turbo CVH. Am I being a bit harsh ?

That's what I thought....anyone else got an opinion ? Should say I wanted the brake fluid changed, as opposed to simply bled as pedal feel not great, but even so....£250 seems a bit on the heavy side to me.

what as in they own a garage or work in a garage or just doing it as a on the side of the road job?if doing it through there books (depending on their hourly rates)sounds abit high, say 1.2 hours for belt,1.0 hour for boot and 0.5 for bfc so in totoal around 2.5 hours of work

I was expecting about £150 - and would have paid that without arguing, but £250 is ripping the arse out of it....

I would of said £100 for labour , as one of these "mates rates" sort of people I look at £100 to be a good daily rate , so that would be one days work , and even taking your time all that can be achieved in 6 hours ...... so a bit steep even taking fitting genuine Ford bits would not be so much ..... Hope that helps

Well I was looking at it as a one man operation ...... and I do not see the point in rushing , guess that is me though , reckon 2 hours for belt , 1 hour per cv boot , and 1 hour for full drain and bleed , leaving me an hour for the trip to KFC and a couple of brews

Funny to read mate no problems with me

Had a word with another fella I know who is good and he said £120 - I'm in London mate so bit of a trek to you, but appreciate your offer and if this falls through may well take you up on it !

to my understanding, mates rates is you help your mate doing whatever you've asked your mate to help you with because your mate is the expert and you are the tea boy

and then that mate will return the favour when he asks you to do stuff

obviously if you are asking about build a house then you'd give him some cash for his troubles, but otherwise a drink or paying for a night out is more than enough from my point of view and all the guys who i've grown up with

I agree Dojj - I know these boys, but not as great mates so don't mind paying - but £250 is taking the piss.

£250 is either Porche mates rates or priced not to deliberately get the job.

If I worked on Porche and the like I wouldn't be working on 30 year old Fords part time, unless I was desperate for cash, make that really desperate for cash, better still down to my last Hobnob.
