Default Am I mad to consider this or not??

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 LX wich is very very low miles with FSH and shitloads of new parts.
It just sits around and hardly ever gets used so I put it up for sale but kinda expecting no-one to actually want it

Now this chap turns up with a black Volvo 850 T5R auto...

Has 120 K on the clocks but engine has been rebuild by reputable firm some 6000 miles ago.
Loads of bits renewed as well.
Has IPD ignition system, Simons race exhaust, 3" downpipe with decat and it sounds the tits!!! Goes well too actually.

Now it is officially the most boring car interior after the Golf III but for some strange reason I like the awkwardness of the thing....the fact that it's HUGE, boxy, hideous but built to last interior and the fact that it's turboed wich leaves room for imrpovement (swiftly followed by destruction).

Now, should I do a straight Swap or am I insane?

I would you it now and again, stuffing the boot full of bikebits and that sorta thing.
Oh, and maybe fit black 18" pegasus rims, black grille, tint the windows dark and...and andd.....!!!!!

ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!

I had a T-5 and it was fantastic. Not sure what your car is worth, but I'd consider getting it.

Loved mine!

well if you are more likely to use the vulva, its more fun, cheaper to run when you do use it and has just as much space , can look pretty damn nice with a few select subtle mods and is turbo'd ... id go for it,
a tutor of mine from college a while back had a volvo with 300,000 miles on a petrol engine, it was still going strong and was used daily , so the mileage shouldnt be a problem , especially if theres receipts for rebuild

The thing is: the GC is a much better looking car! The Volvo is just...well...silly at best I guess.

I do think it would loook really nice on black 18" pegasus's with a black XC style grille and maybe a slight tint on the the windows (otherwise it's a fucking fishbowl).

Felt really solid and I liked that, seems tuning them is cheap and easy as well:

Not sure on the BHP on this one, all I know is it has a K&N airfilter, 3" downpipe, cat removed, Simons exhaust.

Guess it would have to be chipped for that or not?

If not I could still chip it and see a reliable 300 BHP and 400 NM wich is plenty for me.

Apperantly people run silly boost on stock internals as well, just the boxes are said to shit themselves!

Get the deal done

Someone put a picture of a modified V70 in Black up the other day... I know the 850 is slightly more boxy and older looking than the V70 but it looked brilliant.

I'm the opposite, I think the GC looks awful by comparison

The Volvo is a fantastic car. They drive really well, are generally well equiped, reliable and solid. Auto box is even quite nice too.

If it is an R, it's 240bhp standard, unchipped it must be closer to 250bhp with those tweaks. You won't see 300bhp on a standard turbo. You need the slightly bigger unit from an 850R manual I seem to remember. Can be had cheap enough though.

Go beyond 320ish bhp at the fly and you'll run into trouble with cylinder liners and things but to be honest, that's plenty. My auto would still light the wheels up at 50 if the road was damp and that was basically standard.

Here's a pic of my old T-5, fitted with R front bumper and spoiler, as well as a set of 17" Volan wheels from an 850R. Was lowered a bit (a lot at the back ), had big old Cossie cone filter, disabled dump valve for chatter effect, and a minor boost tweak.

Best car I've owned tbh. MPG was it's only downer, but if you have a V8, it will most likely be better. Mine would easily do over 30mpg on the motorway. Fast, comfortable, subtle, massive inside, well equiped, cheap to modify, reliable, there are very few negatives in my opinion.

The 5.9 is fucking awfull on fuell LOL

The Volvo will seem like a Prius in comparison!

Sound like I should do it then.......!

I think turbo units of manual and auto are the same by the way?

MSD quite +35 BHP from a chip so let's say I'd have 275 when mine is chipped, that'll do me!

That V70 is fucking brilliant! Dear God how bad do I want that car!!!???

It does get a bit confusing on engine spec.

The basic T-5 model was a 2.3 20v turbo, 225bhp.

The T-5R had an overboost facility, boosting power to 240bhp.

The later, 850R was a bit different. Auto models retained the earlier spec, but the manual was fitted with a slightly bigger turbo, so power jumped to 250bhp, and there was no overboost, as it just made more grunt anyway. It was also fitted with an LSD as standard.

You can buy 850R manual turbos fairly cheap, or I think turbos from some of the later V70 R models may be a little bigger still if you want more.

To be honest though, my T-5 with a boost tweak was still pretty potent. It wasn't a million miles off M3s and things, so with a chip you should be well away. I went in a chipped one and it went very, very well.

There's a few guys on the Volvo forums with aroun 300bhp, just over, pulling some very impressive 1/4 times considering the size of the car! A few breaking into the 13s, which for a 1.5t car, isn't bad at all!

Got the deal done!

Paintwork wasn't the best, needs little bits doing but inside and mechanically it is lovely!

Even comes with a brandnew turbo not yet fitted!

Previous work carried out in the last year:

After a leaking crankshaftoilseal the engine was taken out and 'refreshed' with new piston rings, new big end bearings, block and head skimmed, valves lapped in and so on.

New radiator, new startmotor, new battery, new airflowmeter, new IPD ignition system, new Stainless exhaust (you will not believe how good it sounds!), K&N airfilter, stainless 3" decatted downpipe, IPD strutbrace and so on.

Previous owner was a surgeon who could happily buy a much more expensive new car but just happens to like old stuff so he's now the proud owner of a nigh on new Jeep!

Inside I will give the leather a good going over and fix a few niggly bits around the car, then it's time to have the paint sorted and then some pics on here!

Must say it feels solid as fuck, like driving a vault!

Good news then mate, interested to see the pics... not surprised you're a fan tbh, sounds like it's been treated exactly how you'd hope.

I had an ex police 850 t5 manual with 150k on the clock, drove like it had done 50k. Terrible wheelspin though!

The T5-R was a limited edition (only 5500 or there abouts ever built I think) and this one has an auto box and traction control!

To me it's a comfy daily cruiser

Indeed, I'm loving mine!

So much space, very comfortable, really well screwed together and a joy to work on!

Fixed loads of little nigly bits as you do when getting a new toy and it just keeps getting better!!!

LOL at already modding it.. I've never owned one, but from what I have read, you'll have a fantastic flying brick once you do basic performance mods to one of these.

How does it compare to the Jeep V8 on MPG??

Grant

Well the Jeep averaged one litre of premium for every 3 kilometres

The Volvo averages one litre for every 10 kilometres so far PMSL!

I'll sort out some pics soonish!
