Default Help wireless routers

Long time no speak but that's the joy of passionford.

I am having major problems with my bt homehub 2 and want to change to a different router??

Now is this possible or do I have to use the bt one supplied?
If I don't what kind of router should I get??

Thanks

Nick

You can use any router you want, but need to know certain things about connection, as well as usernames and passwords, these are NOT your user names and pass words, they are BT ones assigned to you and pre installed in your router, see if you can access them first from the router, if not phone BT for them.
I have just last week swapped from using the plusnet supplied pile of crap router THOMSON was the make, always cutting out etc, new one has not missed a beat and is SO much faster, I now use a TP LINK TD- WD8910G.
I now know about the above as I had a to call a man out, it cost me Ł60 for 20 minutes of his time/work!!

I'm a BT openreach engineer and i have seen issues like that before when visiting customers, In the router setting there are 11 wireless channels and it will always pick the next one, if you go into the setting you can actually allocate a channel to the Xbox, all the channels have a frequency, it's probably another electrical device given off a simular frequency causing interference. Just allocate channel 11 to the Xbox and all should be ok.

To access Hub Manager just open up internet explorer and type 192.168.1.254 in the address bar and it'll access the Hub, you'll need the Admin password which is on the back of the Hub, if you have accessed it before but can't remember the password just push the small Default button on the side of the router for a few seconds and the original password will work. I can't remember exactly how to allocate a channel but it's not hard..

Hope this helps

Ginger

I would first try updating the firmware if possible, I haven't had much dealing with these despite being in IT for a living, if you do need the said pre assigned credentials then simply login to your old router to retrieve them, must be something unique to BT though as I have never come across it!

Personally I would be looking at the Xbox/location first, you say other devices work but do they work in the same room as the console?

It may not be the connection dropping out every 3 to 4 days, I.E the wireless/LAN connection but you may be loseing your WAN connection and a reboot resolves this.

Next time it happens try pinging the router itself, if you can see it then it's NOT a router problem.
