Default Scooby top mount cooler- max BHP?

A guy at work has a bug eye scooby UK300 with rally stickers all over it, it looks totally standard, brakes wheels etc and after seeing my cossie he asked what horses it had, I replied with about 260 right now and then he says his Scooby has made 510 BHP. Very impressive I said, what mods have you got in there and his reply was: a bigger turbo and a race exhaust, with 3 stage boost. Now that sounds like an idiots reply but giving him the benefit of the doubt I paid it closer attention and i noticed it's running a top mount cooler through the scoop.
So what BHP can I safely assume he is running? As I'm going to offer to race the tit in summer when mine is setup to run half decent boost

Standard WRX top mount will be good to about 300-310ish I reckon, standard STi top mount is good for 400bhp. After those levels they'll still be good, but they'll not be the most efficient way of lowering ACTs.

The guy you work with sounds like a tool who is either dillusional with his power claims or taking the piss... there is a chance he's running a top mount oil cooler, however, you should be able to see the FMIC in that case.

Cheers,
Grant

Wish my old Impreza Type R made 500bhp with just them few mods lol

510bhp on a tmic

Fmic kits for Impreza are dirt cheap, would seem silly not to go fmic. 500bhp would need uprated internals, for reliability a 2.5 or 2.35 would be the way to go.
My 2.35 ej22t build cost near £4K just for the short block

Mine had 8grands worth mods to get that
Oil ports were alterd but rest was standard motor
Everything else bar intercooler was changed as type ra
Had spray for intercooler anyway and never was a problem on rolling road

Spent atleast another £6K on turbo, injectors, fmic, headers, exhaust, ecu etc. . .
Very expensive to mod and maintain

It looks like a black rad up front not a silver cooler. So I can safely say he has 400 max even if he has spent £8k on the engine. I'm guessing he hasn't opened the engine. Standard head, gasket, pistons, cooler etc
It could be a good match.

North of 400 is possible with an STi TMIC. Not that far north though.

As for the best FMIC for £££ debate, fit one from an Evo VIII/IX

You dont state what the TMIC actually looks like, size, make, standard ? But it sounds like the guy is a total cock and full of shit.

Andy F has run many 9s 1/4's on a top mount. But it's nowhere near a standard one lol

Simple q to ask is how much he paid for the mods as 500 horses costs 10k

TMIC is good for 400 and if your aim is higher than that then anyone would be factoring in a FMIC into the build as you would'nt be spending X amounts of dough on the engine and leaving a stock wrx cooler on .

you wouldnt go for 500 horses on a YB and run a stock cooler now would you

A Simple upgrade would be to swap the wrx cooler for an STI one

incidentally, the UK300's ran 260 stock as the 300 refers to the build number and should have a plaque on the dash

I have a bug eye sti which is running 330 through the top mount and its fine

Regards
Ian

well there are extra UK300 badges in tacky chrome or the rear panel too, so it may not even be a real one. I will look for the plaque on the dash cheers.

Also I could only see the cooler through the bonnet scoop and it looked like every other fine finned Scooby cooler. I might see if he will pop the bonnet and talk me through it, or just give me the keys haha, he is on a different shift to me at work so we dont chat much.
If its running anything less than a GT30 size turbo I will have to call him on it, in front of everybody at work
Whats a std turbo do BHP wise on one
