Default Daily drive on a budget

Owing to not being able to realistically afford insurance on the cossie and run it every day at this stage (garage queen for now ) i will shortly be on the market for a daily drive car. ideally i need something that is economical, interesting and will be able to put up with driving all day around town. my budget will be around £1000-£1500, anyone have any ideas?

so long as you stay away from gt tdi's i would have thought so will be cheaper to insure than a cossie at your age anyway lol!

mate, im in the same boat. im going to look at a 106 quicksilver on sat. its up for £1495 but my max is £1200.

its done 97k miles, 1.4 engine and for me it will cost £193 a year to insure, £155 tax, and should do 40mpg.

it will be litterally used to drive to and from work so 20 miles a day, so ive changed my mind about getting something flash and just cheap to use etc.

will see how it goes this weekend lol

Mine will also be 20 miles a day tops, arent the quicksilvers just essentially saxos? Friend had a lot of problems with the engine in his saxo and that was a 1.4, but they dont seem too bad for the price they are up for.

Diesel may be sensible, but at that budget, getting a nice diesel is pretty hard. Most of them are old and pretty horrible I think. Anything more modern and nicer can cost a lot more, or you'll just be buying shite.

Plenty of nice petrol motors out there in that bracket if you don't go too crazy though!

i have a golf tdi 1998 which i bought for 1750 a year ago due to always having a nice car as my runaround and paying big insurance and fuel bills.was the best move i ever made in my motoring history.up to 60mpg ,still got a bit of street cred, virtually bullet proof, big enough for the trip to bnq .my next runaround shortly will be another derv golf for sure

tbh mate even if it could do 40mpg you wouldnt get it out of it they handle really well and are nippy for a 1.4 so being a petrol head you will end up spanking it everywhere lol
i remember watching a topgear dvd that had a racing driver in a 106 gti he almost beat an r34 skyline round a track with another racing driver in that, they interviewed him afterwards he said "im going to buy my daughter one of these, so i can nick it at weekends and go hooning about in it!" lol

you will need very small feet tho pedals are really close together

there is a uk 1.8 mx5 on a p reg in the village that hasnt moved for months, flat tyre etc and not the tidiest of things. i knocked on some doors the other week and found the guy who owns it. gave him my mob number and said give me a call with a price.

he never did.

might knock tomoz with £400 in my pocket and see what he says...

Fudgey, just for a heads up on the 106 QuiKsilver, when mine hit around 100k miles it started to fall apart.
Rear beam shat itself (common fault - back wheel looks like its on the piss when looked at from behind.)
Front wishbones
Coilpack
Spax shock started leaking(but had worn well for over 60k)
Drum brake cylinders
Both side CV joints went
Clutch
Gearbox died getting on for 120k as did the clutch cable
Oh and the headgasket was on the way out i think
So just check everything mechanical thoroughly, also the bodywork can start to rust around the engine bay quite nicely if its not been looked after. (As i'm sure you will anyway.)

As for the price, i think they may be taking the piss a little, i paid £1000 5 years ago for mine with under 50k on the clock

Great fun to hoon about in though, a tad slow, not too bad on fuel though, mine was better than the 1.6 Honda civic Exec im running about in now anyway.

Sorry to highjack the thread

passat tdi. not interesting, but get a pd130, cheaper to insure than a golf for some reason, bigger, comfier IMO, chip it to 170hp.

Since ive chipped mine i wouldnt want a different daily, which is good as now my savings can go on a 2nd car

I'll second that, the old dears got a Passat tdi Estate and its proper nice to drive. Very comfy and very easy to not realise how fast your going due to that fact.
The only sod is going for the handbrake and remembering that its a bloody button on the dash!

Not quite, it was a "best handling" video from back in the day and it was an R33 GTR... in fact, I found it on YouTube a wee while ago and added it to my favorites.

If any of you haven't seen it, then it features a great selection of cars, with Clarkson, Tim Harvey and Richard Burns driving cars hard on it and offering their opinions...... basically, it's well worth a watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK-hprvTNf8

Ford Focus gets my vote for your budget, so many to choose from with plenty of engine/spec options. I would personally go for a 1.6 or 1.8 Zetec but make sure it has A/C and heated front screen. Facelifted cars are also nicer IMO (51 plate onwards) Limited edition ones are available too with heated leather etc. (Silver edition, Black edition, Ink edition etc) They are proper fun to drive too, even with standard 4x4 suspension lol! My advice though is don't buy the first one you see, took me quite a while to find a decent one for a friend after going to see so many 'minters'! One of them didn't have any door handles and the alarm wasn't working the door poppers so to get in had to climb through the boot! Needless to say I didn't buy it!

Nice find Grant!

There's no denying the 106 is a decent handling car but can be a little switchy and does lack feel through the electric power steering IMO.

No way I would like to use one as a daily tbh, just a little too unrefined and fall apart too easily.

I bought a 525TDs Tourer for £550 from eBay, E34 shape, 4 electric windows, twin sunroofs, double opening boot etc etc

Great bit of kit, i've had it 5months now and done over 10k miles in it and it has been brilliant.

Never fails to return any less than 450miles to a tank and I drive it pretty hard everywhere

Great tow vehicle, swallows my kids if we go anywhere, boot is massive when seats folded down and as long as its the TDs model it'll be 143bhp - tuning box or remap will make that up to 170 odd.

Defo worthwhile looking at, always a few on ebBay!

if you just want a cheap run around and your not really bothered about how fast it is what about a 1.0l micra? you can get a good one for less than a grand.

thats what im getting at the end of the month. saves using the st170 to go to and from work everyday.
