Zetec Turbo Or Zvh?
I currently have a 1.3 escort mk3 and after just completing restoring it im thinking about changing the engine, but after looking at a few zvh builds and full zetec turbo also im not sure what would be the best path to go down for cheapest and best end result?

It don't need 2.0 zetec to be a quick reliable cheap car, my cvh has been goin 22 years still goes alright and has never not got me home!

They ain't cheaper??? If your Rebuilding a engine there ain't goin to be much in it, they are not more reliable no way and as it's a 2ltr it will be just as juicy and not any quicker!

Pound for pound if you want to go as fast as you can for the least amount of money it has to be full Zetec turbo.
It depends what your budget is as to what route you take imo.
I could have gone Zetec turbo in my S1 but kept my CVH as that was what the car come with and I like to keep things original,to a pont

Yes.
You need to think about how much power you want. 200ish bhp is a reasonable cost, after that it starts to cost more.
There are many people more educated than me on here with this subject, search for zetec turbo in the restoration section and I'm sure you will find everything from a budget decomp plate conversion right up to a 500bhp+ conversion.
Ask the right questions to the right people and the answers will follow.
Gavin.

A standardish head will do almost 300hp on a full zetec turbo I believe.. to do the same with a cvh head on you'd have to get a pretty worked head which doesn't come cheap..
Rods wise standard zetec are good to 280ish..
As said above pound for pound the zetec will give you more for your money i feel, it all depends on whether you want to stay original bla bla bla

A few people have run past 300bhp on standard rods.
Silvertop heads go past 310bhp and standard Blacktop heads more than that.
Making a ZVH makes no sense to me, sticking a crap head on a half decent block, and binning off the standard half decent head that came with it.

Would it be better to go with a blacktop or a silvertop engine then? Also how much would you think the conversion would cost?

i have a zetec turbo making over 320bhp on skimmed pistons and standard rods and its been sweet for few months now at 250bhp it lasted few years only changed a few things for more power and its still sweet and i rag it everyday obviously it would be better to upgrade though! internally mods

A 1.6 cvh NA could get 140+ hp with solid lifter cam and two 40mm webers.
In a light car that would be great fun, and not a gearbox killer.
ZVH or Zetec will destroy the wimpy escort gearbox.
Just my opinion.

I've already got a worked cvh head so thinking of doing a 1.8 short block to replace the 1.6 Cvh. won't be throwing a head away and keeps my engine bay looking kinda original. think the 1.8 pistons can be skimmed ok as I've heard say the crowns are thicker. that'll keep costs down and still give half decent power.
