That's good going. How many miles have you done roughly?

And was that a Ford oil pump or a patent part one?

It was a Ford oil pump with c-f-m billet gears,

done 2000 ish miles in it so far, mostly hard driving round b roads etc, as its my weekend toy,

graph will be done soon,

thats an old graph there, also that dyno run was an inertia run so didnt boost as high, so there is more to come, Sitechs dyno was in the process of having the electronics upgraded to dastek, when we fitted the new oil pump gears, so werent able to get any power readings, but it still feels like its pulling like a train all the way to the red line especially under load / high boost, plus at 8500 the gearing would have meant no need to shift @ the 30-130 day i was supposed to be attending that the snow stopped me from getting down to,

Somebody mentioned about old oil pumps vs new and whether the metals could have been compromised on the newer gear sets from Ford.

No idea if this is the case but Ford did change part numbers on the same pumps (1.8 zetec) half way through production for some reason. Could mean nothing but....?

Interesting that as Lee at Devils always says to use an old Ford oil pump for reasons like that. That's why I've got a second hand pump in mine.

Yeah there seems to be a few folk on here who are using 2nd hand pumps.

Iv gone down this road as well but due to the pump being discontinued at Ford rather than choice

It's more to do with the cars built say 10 years ago (zetec turbo 400hp) not breaking oil pumps.

BUT the last 2 years there has been 5 I know of that have shattered pumps on newer pumps.

So in theory a well seasoned pump is better than a newer one.

im sticking to this idea as well got hold of a 60k escort gti pump out of an r reg escort

what pump did you have on yours when it went?

When you say newer pumps do you mean those purchased as new from Ford or those taken from a ''newer'' or later manufactured Escort?


Wonder if the fitment of the pumps has anything to do with it? ie, older pumps wear so less crucial tolerance when fitting to the crank?

gary aka crazycage said the same to me when chatting about zetec turbo setups, so i stripped and cleaned up the blacktop mondeo pump as it had only done 68k, everything was tight inside and that's seen 7800rpm at a bar once till i realised the limiter was that high, not held there for long though.

They apparentely changed the pumps later on, so anything that came on a Ford as standard is better than anything bought from a Ford dealer as a replacement a few years later.

There has been a 500+ bhp Silvertop Zetec turbo that did a good number of miles on high revs too with an 'old' Ford oil and did it fine.

Newer pumps as in new from Ford or even newly fitted to an old engine.

You need one that has a good 30,000 under its belt but which is still in good condition. Still a rick there though!!!! BUT these pumps appear to be more reliable.
I certainly wouldn't risk using one though.


You have an engine let go and take the engine out you will be paying out on a rebuild the cost of fitting a dry sump set up first time round!

yes mate the lad in hungary smashed a set.

rick runs a set with no probs in his zetec turbo .

any zetec engine over 350hp i would be thinking of a dry sump set up.

any more info on the pump, engine configuration, revs, oil used etc.
i've been bouncing off the limiter all week trying to sort some of the fuelling up the top end of the map, limiter at 7400rpm.
would be good to know the conditions of failure.

I have 99% finished a remote oil presure pump system which uses the wet sump, it is a complete kit to remove the chances of a engine crapping itself due to the std exspiring , burtonpower and Ian howell are having the first few but I can increase my batch if anyone is interested ( I also have my dry sump kit 99% finished)

plan on stripping tomorrow so will add some pics,
standard ford pump with the rst lower pulley fitted, ford fully synthetic 5/30 oil with local 13 row remote cooler,
noticed it tapping of late from the top thinking lifters were getting tired then on private road tramming on 4th gear around 6k then on run down i heard a tapping worse than the little lifter rattle but still oil light not on,
took it steady limping it to work when dipped clutch at lights and it cut straight out itself and wouldnt spin over kind of like it heat seized itself,

took it home via aa,tried to spin it over when it was cold and started first time as always as soon as it fired i turned it straight off,
as said investigate tomorrow and add some pics
came to the top

I had a zetec silvertop oil pump fail and it was a new pump. the pressure valve was sticking. i didnt realise this and when setting up my megasquirt management suvsiquently wrecked the shells in bottom end. one this was my sump was sand blasted and i wondered if there was a small bit of grit left in there that jammed it. best to check and service the valve by undoing the torx bolt that holds it in. i now run a washer behind spring to increase the oil pressure slightly. no probs now!

cheers for the tip,i will be looking into this tomorrow,i have a spare silvertop sat here for my 2.1 build so going to use this pump to get me by but i will clean and inspect it first

sounds more suspect than an oil pump i think.
i ran a zvh hard for two years without failure.
cvh heads only have 4 oil ways to get oil from the head back to the sump, zetec heads have 8, may be an issue with that maybe.

Just been looking through some of this thread and seen the Titan pan that has been modded, if you have cut the troth off and moved it back then this can cause then this has been known the scrap the scavenge rotar in the pump , I see this before when we removed pump from this kind of modded pan and the rotar in that scavenge stage is going blue with heat which if not address will end with a bang and a locked up pump

maybe, the hard was fine on the cvh before and cam followers all good too before, and the oil ways have been press blanked leaving the 4 I need,its dedinately oil pump mate as I checked my mocal when it went and it wasn't as hot as it should be so has to be oil pump in my eyes,we will see tomorrow.
