Default Bad Blow Out with pic

Had a bad one few nights back on the m74 south of Lockerbie

Was galloping on aswell, was the rear left, I was middle lane hoging due to really bad fog, motorway was dead, the bang swung me into fast lane and I got 2 large swaying movements that I counter steered before coming to a rest on hard shoulder

Brown trouser's I tell thee, had a sweat on and a little shake, I put it down to a pot hole

Anyone else had a bad blow out?

Oh the bastard tailgate cracked my heed open when i was checking for a spare, not a good end to a bad day

any idea what pressure you had in the tyre? looks as though it could have been rubbing on suspension or something any marks around the rest of the side of the tyre?

if it was a pot hole i'd expect a fucked rim too or at least some rim damage. is there any damage to the rim ie flat spot where its pinched the tyre?

lucky bugger though, glad you managed to catch it as rear blow outs normally spin people into the barrier!

90% of damage like that is caused by underinflation. Won't take much to accelerate the rear on a sidewall!

Similar thing happened to me once, makes your bum hole twitch doesnt it!

M40 Near Beaconsfield, middle lane, bang, the back end goes all over the place and it was all I could do to get it slowed and onto the shoulder. Focussed the attention at the time, scared the life out of me after. My 11 year old son thought it was great though.

Mine went on the inside but there was no evidence of rubbing, pressures were OK but I had taken the boy fishing and driven down a pretty bumpy track so I also think pothole. If the wall gets damaged, the damaged section gets hot at speed and lets go.

As part of the cleaning ritual I now check for damage.

+1 as they say these days, usually a slow puncture, or even a bead leak, the pressure lowers & the tyre starts to overheat, mixed with a spot of jolly old run-flat damage, then the whole shooting match lets go.

Can be genuinely nasty, tyre failure on the rear is generally worse than than on the front, so well held sir.

many moons ago (ok about 4 years) I was driving back to work work in London in the wee hours from manchester and hit a piece of exhaust in the outside lane on the toll road! I was making very good progress untill then..... my BMW 330d behavieved very well and dispite thinking I was going to die I made a controlled stop on the hard shoulder damaged my rim too and cost me nearly Ł500 for new tyre and rim! The 50 mph top speed on the spare was a pain too with 100 miles to go!

Good job you were in the middle lane otherwise you would have been thrown into the barrier. I wouldn't have thought that that was caused by a pothole as the damage is on the side wall, i tend to agree with the underinflation theory and a lot of the damage shown could have been caused after the initial blow out as the tyre is dragged (as opposed to rolling) across the road surface.

Heres mine. did this in 2007 when I just finished building the cab, its first show. Donny custom car show. I was tramming back, a pack of us when I galloped off up front. A few miles later two of my mates were pulling in front, braking and flashing hazards. Thought they were being cooonts so I carried on. Then I noticed smoke billowing out the rear in my nearside mirror. Immediatley pulled onto hardshoulder and came to a rest. The tyre literally fell off as I rolled to a standstill. If I hadnt of noticed I could of easily spun off the motorway. Lucky escape!

That's bad. Good thing you were in the middle, could have been a lot worse.

How old were the tyres?
