Will Escort Cossies ever hit the low prices the Saph did?

I was just browsing the classifieds on Pistonheads and it got me thinking about how well Escos prices have held up. They're knocking on now and don't seem to be coming down much. I remember when a decent Saph could be had for about £3500.
Will the Escort ever get to that level, and if not, why not?
It's an itch I've always wanted to scratch, but when I get rid of the MR2 in a year or two I think a twin turbo Supra or an E46 M3 represent a much better value circa £10k buy.......

The only thing it has over the Saph really is that it's the final RS Cosworth, and it must be that which holds them up.

No they won't. The Escort is far more iconic than the Saph and hit 'modern classic' status very quickly.
Of course it isn't the best car out there for the money, but none of the RS Fords from before 2000 are really. You could easily spend £4k on an RS Turbo now, and I'm sure there's plenty of better cars out there for that money. And £5/6k for a Saph isn't extreme now, and I'm sure you'd probably get a nice Evo or some such for that money.
But technical ability isn't what it's about. All the RS badged Fords tend to end up with classic/cult status, which means they hold their value. The Escort Cosworth is probably the most well known of them all (with the likes of Clarkson etc still giving them a mention to this day), so it naturally makes values hold.

I doubt it. Not enough of them around to let the price get that low.
I think an Escort Cossie in decent nick will always get 8/9/10k or thereabouts. Will become a true classic, the saph was never going to be that really, imo.

When Escorts get low I will be buying the best examples possible and storing them, look at Saph's and 3dr prices going up big time recently, the Escort will do the same
obviously the best examples will never really get low? I will say IMO i have the best/cleanest/lowest mileage/original escort cosworth in the UK and more than likley all over the world but that will never ever depriciate just like the rest of the best examples.

Some good points. I'd still love one, just to scratch an itch. Evos leave me cold tbh. I'm much more into RWD personally, but as it's a childhood dream I'd still have an Escos.
I personally think the Saph is becoming more of a classic performance car now than a serious alternative to anything modern due to its age and it's mainly bought by Ford/RS enthusiasts, especially now the prices have shored up, rather than young lads looking for a performance car.

they have come down abit from a few yrs ago but i dont think they will drop much more.....
ive personaly had 2 and i wouldnt buy another as i think the 3dr drives better and i had a mk1 frs and that can be had for around the same money and its a much better car to drive and can be used everyday

is it just me?
ive noticed saph prices dropping rapidly within the last few months?
i was looking for one about 2 years ago and couldnt find a rough one for less than 5k!
now there are decent spec ones going for aroung the 5k mark( 300bhp+, big brakes etc...)
i think the saph are actually beginning to become more popular, for example everyone overhere in N.I are looking 2500+ for standard cossy reps!!!! nealry the same price as ACTUAL cossys
but the price doesnt reflect the car lately

The Saph cos got killed in the 80's/90's by insurance companies/car crime etc.I've got an autotrader somewhere with e/f plate saphs for £3500-4000 and that was in 1997!!!!escos were still 12/13k at the cheapest then and IMHO have always been a special car, unlike the Saph, which Incidently I own a Saph so that's an unbiased view.
As said, for £3-4 k now generally your Saph will be a crock of shit, yes there's still bargains but don't forget a standard Saph will always bring in £4k broken as long as it's running ok and an escos more like £7-8k broken so I can't see the prices dropping much more really.
Possibly the small turbo in an undesireable colour on say a cat d or c could dip below £8k but I'd say even the worst escos has to be £10k with a ticket.

James only 2000 Sapphires left ? what registered with the likes of dvla ? seems low.
Bluesmoke,no way imo will an Escos ever come down in price like that.I love Sapphires owning two myself but I am sure when they came out people wanted one as opposed to the older getting 3dr but not now.Look at the iconic status of that and the prices they hold and can command now(a sapp would have to be mega cond or spec to reach those heights). If the escos was just a normal shell like the Sapphire is maybe so but its one on its own and took on the iconic status pretty much straight away and is something special imo.

as to a standard sapphire breaking for 4K sorry mate your a million miles away, you will struggle to get 2.5K in bits e bay has de valued the parts to the point of them being at scrap yard prices
I think the older they get all the cossie varients will go up in value
as for escossies being low price saph money I don't think that will ever happen
I can't see why though its only a chavy ford escort

to all of you knocking the saphs on this thread

Snobbery, thats the only reason Escorts are more expensive. IIRC Sapphs were the dearer car new?
The mindsets of some people are mental - Escorts and Sierra can be expensive, but aren't allowed to be cheap. Sapphires can be cheap, but aren't allowed to be expensive
Yeah and a Sapphire underneath

i would say they will go down , will get to a point where all the people who are/were into them have had or got one , and not all the younger generation will want one of these with the 2 versions of frs available now which are a better car all round imo
and btw the 2wd saff is best cosworth to drive imo (and i own a 3door)
heres a cheap low miles car that hasent sold what ever that says ??

bit of a hypothetical question but, what will happen to these cars and prices when there is little or no petrol left..will people be paying big money for a car that they cant drive..i know people do this already but not everyone..i imagine a replacement fuel will be made but surely it will never be the same?? thoughts
i think they have about leveled out as a price and the rise in fuel prices is gonna make them stay where they are rather than go up in price
nobody wants to buy a car they cant afford to run which is why the saph went so low in price
as for saphs not fetching over 2500 breaking them,,,,, seems strange a person who breaks them for a living is saying that,,,,,, not a person who used to break them and now works for the council as there was so little money in it,,,,, maybe its just me who thinks of it that way but thats cause a gearbox, leather trim and block and head bare is gonna set you back 1700 quid alone easy with out injectors, bonnet, bumpers, headlamps, diff, brakes, wheels, exhaust, switches, doors, shocks blah blah blah unless that dont make up 800 quid ? and general shite people need when doing jobs like power steering pump, alernators, sensors even the loom and ecu will sell
though ill admit im not a professional in this trade and maybe pete is now selling engines for 500 quid, boxes for 75 quid and ecu's for 30 quid ect as ive not needed to look for cossie parts as i no longer own one just know what im paying for subaru prices

We wont be running out of fuel in our lifetime or are childrens lifetime,so i dont think thats a issue

But to answer the OP question no as with all the Cosworths the value is only going to rise, Escos I can see remaining at the top due to the History and the limited production run and the 3DR won't be far behind either.
It is possible to pick an MOT'D Saph up for 3K plus but it would be a total dog otherwise and that was a few years back, prices have gone up now.
